Frequently Asked Questions
A Nurse Practitioner (also referred to as an NP) must first become a registered nurse and then complete a Master's degree specializing in NP practice. Before becoming licensed, Nurse Practitioners require hundreds of hours of specialized clinical practice, both with experienced NPs and physicians.
A Nurse Practitioner has the authority to perform advanced health assessment, diagnose health problems, order diagnostic tests, make referrals, and prescribe medications. This is what makes their role different from a nurse. Nurse Practitioners manage many aspects of care - from the point of entry into the healthcare system through to the community in which they reside, participating in health community policy development, health promotion and illness prevention.
Nurse Practitioners are not inferior to physicians, nor are they substitutes for physicians. Rather, they are independent healthcare providers integral to the healthcare system.
