Applying to Graduate

Time to apply for graduation? Ensure everything is in order by, just following the steps below.

1. Confirm Eligibility

Here are the steps to ensure you are eligible for graduation:

  1. Check UR Self-Service to confirm that the program you expect to graduate from is on record.
  2. Schedule a meeting with your Academic Advisor to stay on track and to update your program, if necessary.
  3. Verify you have completed all program requirements or will do so before the next application deadline in Advisor (Degree Audit).
  4. Be aware that each faculty and federated college has its own approval processes and internal deadlines.

If you are a graduate student, it is essential to understand and meet the FGSR deadlines.

The following programs are not eligible for graduation:

  • qualifying programs
  • academic transition programs
  • non-credit programs
2. Complete Application

There are two application submission windows:

  • August 1 to January 31 (recommended for students completing program requirements in fall term or winter to attend Spring Convocation in June).
  • February 1 to July 31 (recommended for students completing program requirements at the end of spring/summer term to attend Fall Convocation in October).

Apply to graduate and monitor your application status in UR Self-Service.

3. Update Contact Information

Ensure your contact information is up to date in UR Self-Service.

  • Primary mailing address: This is the address where your parchment will be sent to if you don’t attend the convocation ceremony. If your parchment is returned or lost in the mail, you will be charged for the cost to reprint and remail.
  • Primary telephone number: If you want the U of R to apply on your behalf for Graduate Retention Program (Undergraduate Students only) your primary telephone number is mandatory.
  • Preferred email address: If you want the U of R to apply on your behalf for Graduate Retention Program (Undergraduate Students only) your preferred email address is mandatory.
4. Clear Outstanding Accounts

Please ensure your account balance is settled. If you have an outstanding balance, you can still graduate and attend the convocation ceremony. However, you will not receive your parchment, transcripts, or other proof of graduation until your account is cleared. To ensure your parchment is available at the ceremony, please settle your account at least five business days before the event.

5. Monitor Your Email
Monitor your @uregina.ca email account for detailed information about your convocation ceremony.

Graduation Approval Process

First Stage
After you apply for graduation through UR Self-Service, your faculty or federated college will audit your file to ensure that you will be eligible to graduate when you expect to. If there are any issues, your faculty or federated college will contact you.
Second Stage
Your faculty or federated college notes on your record that you have applied to graduate, and progress in your remaining courses is monitored.
Third Stage
If you complete all of the courses successfully and maintain the grade point averages you need to graduate, your faculty will determine that your program is complete and whether you have earned any instituional honours such as Distinction. For more information about institutional honours, refer to your academic calendar.
Fourth Stage

Once your faculty has approved your program as completed, they recommend your name to the Executive of Council for formal approval. Executive of Council meets once a month from September to June, except in December.

All faculties and federated colleges' approval processes and deadlines vary. Please contact your faculty or federated college student services office for information regarding your application status.

Fifth Stage
After Executive of Council's formal approval, the Chancellor confers your credential by signing the lists of graduands. Your degree, diploma, or certificate appears on your official transcript.
