Why Choose the University of Regina?

Saskatchewan flag in the wind

Experience Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan, which comes from Kisiskatchewanisipi, the Cree word for the river that runs through the province meaning "swift-flowing river", became a province in 1905 and is located in Western Canada. With prairie and boreal biomes, Saskatchewan has an area of 651,900 square kilometers, where nearly 10% of it is fresh water - composed mostly of rivers, reservoirs, and the province's 100,000 lakes.

Saskatchewan is nicknamed "The Land of the Living Skies" after its ever-changing, vast-reaching skies, and picture-perfect sunrises and sunsets.

The Legislative Building in Regina

It's the Queen City

Regina is the capital city of Saskatchewan, and is located in the southern part of the province. Named to honour Queen Victoria, it is home to approximately 250,000 people. Sunny Regina offers the amenities of a larger city with the community feel of a small urban centre. The winters here are very cold, but the summers are hot and dry.

Regina is situated on Treaty 4 Territory, the traditional lands of the Cree, Salteaux, Dakota, Nakota, Lakota, and the homeland for the Metis/Michif nations. Found on flat, treeless plains, every tree in Regina was planted by hand. Regina has many unique tourist attractions including the Saskatchewan Legislative Building, Government House, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Museum, and Wascana Lake, the jewel of Regina.

What Comes Next?

You've been accepted to the University of Regina. Now what?

Get Registered

Once admitted, the Study Abroad office will contact you with instructions on how to get registered in courses for your upcoming exchange.  It is important for you to work closely with your advisor from your home institution to understand what types of courses will transfer back to your home program.

Following acceptance, you will gain access to our Visual Schedule Builder (VSB) which is an online tool that will help you shop for available courses.

Visual Schedule Builder (VSB) – You will receive login instructions following your acceptance regarding how to use this tool.

Course Catalogue – A full list of University of Regina courses.  The “Searchable Course Catalogue” link will allow you to see only those courses which are scheduled for the semester you wish to study at the University of Regina.

Select Your Courses

When selecting courses, we ask that you pay attention to the following:

  • Full-time status.
Exchange students must be considered full-time students throughout the entirety of your time at the University of Regina.  This requires that you register for 9-15 credit hours (3 to 5 courses).  Please understand that 15 credit hours (5 courses) is a very heavy workload, and we typically find that our exchange students do best when registered in 3 or 4 courses.
  • The level of the course (indicated by the first digit of the course number).
100-level courses are typically introductory and require few, if any, prerequisites.  400-level courses are considered senior-level and will require specific background in that subject area to register.  500-level courses and above are considered graduate-level and are not available to exchange students.
  • Required prerequisite or corequisite courses.
Many of our courses require some background in the subject area prior to registering.  Prerequisites can be rather broad: “Completion of 30 credit hours” or more specific: “Completion of 60 credit hours including PSYC 101 and 102”.  Our team will work with our Academic Advisors on campus to ensure you are registering in appropriate courses given your academic history.
  • Required laboratory and seminar sections for some lecture courses.
For courses with these mandatory components, you will have to register for both the course and for an associated lab or seminar.  Details can be found in the course description.
  • Course restrictions.
There are some courses restricted to specific cohorts of students and these will be listed in the course description.  Most will prohibit exchange students from registering, so it is typically best for you to find an alternate section or a new course with no restrictions listed.
  • Class scheduling.
You cannot be in two places at once! The VSB will help you visualize your course schedule and will not allow you to choose classes with overlapping meeting or exam times.  We also ask that you pay attention to your final exam schedule.  While it is possible to select a schedule where you would be writing multiple final exams on the same day, it is best that you space out your exams as much as possible.
  • Remaining space available in the course.
Some courses are very popular and might already be at capacity when you are shopping for courses.  While some will have waitlists, it is best for you to consider alternate courses with space remaining.

Once you have a schedule built on VSB that you and your home institution are happy with, the Study Abroad team will work with Academic Advisors from across campus to get you registered.  Please understand that we will do our best to get you into the courses you have chosen, however we must be mindful of the prerequisites, capacities and restrictions of each of our courses.  There is often some back-and-forth that will occur between our team and yourself before we land on a schedule that is best for you!  You can help us by ensuring that you choose your schedule as soon as possible (we will let you know when registration can begin) and check your emails regularly for updates from our team.
