Understanding Study Permits
A study permit is a document issued to you at the Port of Entry (POE) by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Any student who has been admitted to the University of Regina and will be undertaking a program of study that is six months in length, or longer, is required to have a valid study permit.
Study permits can take months to process, so it's important to apply as soon as possible after you receive your admission and all of the required documents for your application. Documents needed vary from country to country, so contact the nearest Visa Application Centre in your home country to learn which documents you need for your application and whether you can submit your application online or by paper. The fee to apply for a study permit is $150 CAD; some applicants may also have an added biometrics fee ($85 CAD).
As of January 22, 2024, most undergraduate students must include a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) with their application. More information can be found on our Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) page.
We recommend to avoid making any travel arrangements to Canada before your application is approved.
Your Conditions as a Study Permit Holder
Remain Enrolled and Actively Pursue Your Studies
You must ensure that you remain enrolled at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and actively pursue your studies by continuously maintaining your registration requirements. Remember that you are here to study and it's your responsibility to ensure you make timely progress towards completing your program of study.
Follow All Printed Conditions and Remarks
When you receive your study permit, you will notice there are several pieces of information to take note of, such as the location or institution at which you're eligible to study, when your status in Canada expires, and if you're allowed to work in Canada while you study. Take note of these conditions and remarks and ensure to abide by them at all times.
Extend Your Status Before It Expires
It is your responsibility to ensure you know when your status in Canada expires and that you apply to extend it, if needed. Mark the expiry date of your study permit in your calendar, find out the process for renewing your study permit, and plan to submit your study permit extension application 30 to 60 days before your study permit expires. If you're in Canada with family members whose status is dependent on yours, make sure to plan to extend their documents, as well.
Restore Your Status If It Expires
If you fail to extend your status before it expires and your study permit expired less than 90 days ago, you may be able to submit an application to restore your status. During this time, you cannot study and you cannot work. As soon as possible, contact our team during our regular business hours so we can provide guidance according to your situation.
After You Apply to Extend Your Study Permit
Maintained Status
If you have submitted your application to extend your study permit before your current permit expires, you can remain in Canada, continue studying, and continue working (provided you meet the eligibility requirements) while you wait for a decision on your application. This is called being on maintained status.
Registration Hold - Study Permit Required
Once you receive your study permit, make sure to send a copy to us so we can update our records and remove any study permit-related holds on your account. If you don't send us a copy of your new document, we'll place a registration hold on your account that will prevent you from being able to enroll in classes in the next academic term.
