Living Off Campus
Considerations to Keep In Mind
Your Budget
How much are you ready and able to spend? Living costs in Regina can vary depending on location, size of the dwelling, and how many people are living there.
Take note of additional costs that are not always included in the rental amount, such as water, heating, cooling, electricity, trash services, parking fees, internet, cable, and telephone.
Security deposits are amounts of money that landlords require to secure the rental contract and they are less than or equal to one month's rent. Before making any payments, make sure to review the contract in full and assess the information for any fraudulent activity. Landlords cannot ask for more than one month's rent as a security deposit.
When making any payments to a landlord, remember to include the month and year that the payment is for to avoid future complications or disputes. Keep a record of all payments, as well.
The Location
Many areas are considered safe, however, it's important to research different locations and check out review pages to make sure you're making an informed decision. The price point on a rental property might seem appealing, but consider what amenities you might be losing if you choose it.
You should also consider your transportation methods. Do you have a vehicle and, if so, where can you park it? Do you need to take the bus? If yes, then find out where the nearest bus stop is located. Also note walking distances to stores, parks, bike paths, and schools.
Your Comfort Levels and Lifestyle
Are you someone who likes to wake up early and play loud music while cooking? Are you arriving with your family and small children? What type of space do you need to study effectively and efficiently? Do you need lots of quiet time for yourself? Do you mind sharing laundry or washroom facilities? These are all questions to consider when searching for off-campus housing.
You'll need to determine how much space is preferable according to your needs and your budget. Also take note if you need to live with other individuals and make sure you have a way out if the situation is not suitable for you!
As well, consider whether you can bring all of your own belongings and furniture or if you need a space that is already furnished. Opting for a furnished space may cost more monthly and be reflected in your rent!
Finding Off-Campus Housing
Local housing registries, websites, and rental companies will have many options for you to choose from based on your individual needs and circumstances. Although there are government policies and regulations in place to keep the rental market fair and safe, it's important to note that you will be fully responsible for any rental agreements you enter off campus.
