Academic Dress
The academic dress worn at Convocation depends on the qualifications held and the institution that conferred them. Some University officials wear special gowns that denote their position or their role in the ceremony.
Gowns are designed to leave about 10 inches of leg showing. Keep this in mind when you decide what to wear underneath!
If you attend Convocation, you will be assigned a long-sleeved gown. If you are graduating with a degree, you will also be assigned a hood that corresponds to the degree you are earning.
Graduands are welcome to wear their Indigenous ceremonial dress, other cultural ceremonial dress, or their military or law enforcement dress uniform with, or instead of, the gown at the convocation ceremonies. In these instances, graduands must still wear the University of Regina hood. Protocol inquiries about appropriate academic regalia should be directed to the Registrar's Office: ur.graduation@uregina.ca.
Although every effort is made to keep the venue temperature comfortable, with the intense lighting and weight of the academic gown, you could become warm. Keep in mind you will be walking and climbing stairs therefore, choose appropriate shoes and clothing. Corsages, extraneous apparel, jewelry and/or unapproved headgear are not permitted.
Note: The University of Regina does not sell or rent graduation regalia.
