  5. 2SLGBTQIA+ financial aid

The University of Regina is committed to providing an environment where 2SLGBTQIA+ students can thrive both academically and personally. In recognition of the many challenges faced by 2SLGBTQIA+ students, a range of financial assistance opportunities have been established to empower and support these students.

Derek Seitz UR Loved Bursary

The Derek Seitz UR Loved Bursary was established last year to support 2SLGBTQIA+ students who have experienced homelessness.

The bursary supports University of Regina students who require – or have required – the services of Lulu’s Lodge during their studies. The fund met the $25K endowment mark last year and the U of R hopes to continue raising funds so more students can be supported in perpetuity.

UR Pride Centre Bursary

The UR Pride Centre Bursary was established in 2018 to support undergraduate students in any faculty who have self declared as a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. One award of $1,000 is presented annually in the fall.

Button Family Scholarships

The Button Family EDI Award was established in 2021 to support an undergraduate student who has demonstrated financial need and community involvement in social justice initiatives. One award of $1,000 will be presented annually in the fall.

The Button Family EDI Graduate Research Award was established in 2021 to support a graduate student whose research focuses on social responsibility, anti-racism, inclusion (e.g., 2SLGBTQIA+, disability, immigrants, and gender) or reconciliation. One award of $1,000 will be presented annually in the fall.

University of Regina Queer Initiative

The University of Regina Queer Initiative (URQI) in partnership with the Humanities Research Institute and supported by the Office of the Vice-President (Research) invites proposals for research projects in the area of 2SLGBTQIA+ Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity (EDI). Micro-grants of $500 to $5,000 are offered.

You can apply for these opportunities and browse other awards by visiting the U of R’s Award Applications page.

These grants are designed to enable researchers to develop projects that enhance EDI at the University of Regina and that develop knowledge regarding 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusivity in research, teaching, administration, policy, and decision-making.

About the University of Regina

Set in the heart of the Canadian prairies we are a comprehensive, mid-sized university where the opportunities are as limitless as the horizon. Our campuses are on Treaty 4 and 6 - the territories of the nêhiyawak, Anihšināpēk, Dakota, Lakota, and Nakoda peoples, and the homeland of the Michif/Métis nation. It is our responsibility to strengthen relationships with Indigenous communities to build a more inclusive future for all. Our three federated colleges, 10 faculties, 25 academic departments, and 18 research centres foster innovative research with practical and theoretical applications. We are committed to cultivating the potential of our 16,000 students and supporting their health and well-being. We take learning beyond the classroom through work and volunteer experiences to develop career-ready graduates.

Let’s go far, together.
