Welcome to New PIMS Postdoctoral Fellow
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is pleased to announce Dr. Samir Mondal will be joining us as a new PIMS postdoc under the sponsorship of Dr. Shaun Fallat this fall semester!
Growing up in a small village in West Bengal, India, he completed his Master’s degree in Pure Mathematics at the University of Calcutta, India, and he is currently a research scholar at the India Institute of Technology Madras while completing his PhD under the supervision of Prof. K. C. Sivakumar (IITM) and Prof. Michael Tsatsomeros (WSU). His current research interests are in matrix positivity which includes studies on eigenstructure, factorizations, transformations, and roots of matrix positivity classes. A key part of his research involves the investigation of fractional powers of a \(P\)-matrix, which leads to a conclusive resolution of a longstanding conjecture: If \(A^k\) is a \(P\)-matrix for all positive integers \(k\), then the eigenvalues of \(A\) are positive.
Outside of his studies, Dr. Mondal enjoys playing various sports like badminton, table tennis, football (soccer), and cricket where he can meet new people. He is especially looking forward to connecting and working with various members of the department, and he is excited about exploring Regina and the UofR campus!
Welcome to the Department, Dr. Mondal!
