Meet Our Newest Postdoctoral Fellow in Statistics

12 July 2024

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is excited to announce Dr. Mathew Olajiire Aibinu’s tenureship as postdoctoral fellow under the sponsorship of Dr. Yang Zhao!

After obtaining his Master of Science in Mathematics from African University of Science and Technology in Nigeria, Dr. Aibinu earned his Ph.D. in Mathematical Science from University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. His primary research focus involves applying mathematical models to describe and interpret economic behaviour and developing algorithms to improve the efficiency of programs and technologies, which are vital in raising the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a nation, but he also enjoys studying analysis, optimization, and differential equations as it relates to his research.

Utilizing his extensive experience with high-performance computing, dynamics simulation, research on economic models, and population dynamics and algorithms, Dr. Aibinu partners with organization leaders and researchers from various fields such as engineering, computer science, and economics to perform innovative research for business investments, economic development, and the improvement of efficiency with regards to advanced computing and artificial intelligence (AI). His research has attracted several awards and fellowships, both nationally and internationally. His most recent awards include the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) Centennial Postdoc Fellowship, which is a Sandwich Fellowships with Top 100 Global Universities (2023-2025),  and the 2024 Banking Sector Education and Training Authority (BANKSETA) award for research in applied mathematics that has applications in the bank sector.
