Awards & Scholarships for Biology Students
The Department of Biology has many scholarship opportunities available to undergraduate students. Below is a list of awards targeted specifically to students enrolled in programs offered by the Department.
Additional scholarships are listed at SAMS (undergraduate students) and at GAP (graduate students). Please note that the scholarship information on the Department of Biology website is for reference only, and in the case of a discrepancy between this website and SAMS or GAP, SAMS and GAP will be considered to be correct.
Scholarships for Undergraduate Students
Dr. Suzanne Marcia Nilson Scholarship in Biology
1 award ($950)
Deadline 3 October (Fall) Application required
The scholarship will be awarded to a First Nations University of Canada/University of Regina undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:
- Pursuing a Bachelor of Science majoring in Biology/Environmental Science
- Completed a minimum of 30 credit hours toward their program
- Minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 70%
- Aboriginal ancestry (self-declared)
- Preference will be given to an Aboriginal student who is enrolled at the First Nations University of Canada
Dr. Robert M. Agnew Memorial Award
1 award ($1100)
Deadline 1 June (Summer) No application required
Awarded to a graduating Biology major with the highest average in biology courses.
G. F. Ledingham Scholarship
1 award ($1650)
Deadline 3 October (Fall) No application required
Awarded to an outstanding full-time student who meets the following criteria:
- Enrolled in 15 credit hours and entering the fourth year of Bachelor of Science program in Biology
- Must have completed a minimum of 8 Biology courses and have attained the highest grade point average in those courses
University of Regina Women Susan McLaren Bursary
1 award ($1200)
Deadline 3 October (Fall) Application required
The bursary will be awarded to a University of Regina undergraduate female student who meets the following criteria:

Pursuing an undergraduate degree in the faculty or department specified annually by the University of Regina Women. (Fall 2021: Faculty of Science, Bachelor of Science, major in Biology)

Has completed a minimum of 53 credit hours

Has a minimum Undergraduate Grade Point Average (UGPA) of 75%;

Is enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours in the semester the award is presented
-
Is actively involved in extracurricular or volunteer activities both on and off the university campus (e.g. sports, social clubs, volunteering, entrepreneurship, etc)

Demonstrates financial need
NOTE: This bursary is named in honour of an active member of the University of Regina Women. Each year this bursary will be named by the University of Regina Women in honour of an outstanding woman who has been involved with the University of Regina Women.
Muriel E. Finlayson Undergraduate Environmental Science Scholarship
1 award ($4475)
Deadline 1 Feb (Winter) Application required
The scholarship will be awarded to a University of Regina undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:
- Pursuing a Bachelor of Science with a strong focus in environmental science
- Registered and remain registered in a minimum of 24 credit hours in the two semesters immediately preceding the semester in which the award will be held. A Co-op work term may be used in lieu of one 12 credit hour semester
- Entering year 3 (completed 53 credit hours) of their program
- Minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 85%
Wascana Preceptory No. 51 Knights Templar Scholarship
1 award ($7,600; paid in 2 instalments of $3,800)
The scholarship will be awarded to a University of Regina undergraduate student who is:

Registered for full-time studies minimum of 12 credit hours

Completed a minimum of 54 credit hours

Saskatchewan High School graduate

Have maintained an UGPA of 80% or better, average based on all University of Regina courses taken, but when a course has been repeated, only the grade in the most recent approved attempt is used

Entering the third or fourth year of study in a program leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Indian Fine Arts, Theatre or Visual Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education or a Bachelor of Science with a Major in Biology, Chemistry or Computer Science

Statement of scholastic merit from a member of Faculty should be included with the application
Notes:
- Selection of the student is based on demonstrated good citizenship and involvement in family, school and community environments.
- To qualify for the second instalment the recipient must pass all courses and maintain a minimum of 80% average during the Fall semester of study.
Scholarships for Graduate Students
Dr. Vernier and Leonne Rondeau Prize in Biology
1 award ($2400)
The prize will be awarded to a University of Regina graduate student who meets the following criteria:
- Is graduating or has graduated with a Master of Science in Biology degree;
- Has maintained a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 80% in the Master's program;
- Has presented an outstanding research thesis; and
- Has demonstrated community service and/or volunteer activity
Paul Riegert Graduate Award in Biology
1 award ($2000)
The scholarship will be awarded to a University of Regina graduate student who meets the following criteria:
- Enrolled in a MSc or PhD in Biology;
- Entering (1st, 2nd or 3rd semester) student in the current calendar year;
- Registered full-time (minimum of 6 credit hours).
Note: The award will be given to the student(s) with the strongest academic and research record who does not receive a Tri-Council scholarship.
Biology Undergrad and Grad Society (BUGS) Graduate Scholarship
1 award ($500)
Deadline 28 February (Winter) Application required
- Full time graduate student in Biology;
- Minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 80%; and
- Has demonstrated through an application in writing, not to exceed one page, volunteer involvement within the University.
- Recipients may not hold any other major award(s) of $10,000 or greater concurrently with this award.
- Up to date transcripts, which include current semester registration; and
- One page statement about your volunteer involvement within the University.
