This guide outlines the steps to class registration and provides links to key registration resources. We also recommend that all students book an academic advising appointment with their faculty, federated college or with the Student Success Centre. They can help you navigate program schedules, pre-requisite course requirements, and course sequencing structures.

If you have questions or concerns regarding course registration, contact an Academic Advisor.

Time to Register?

Priority Time Ticket Schedule

Check your time-ticket* in UR Self-Service for your exact date:

  • Login to UR Self-Service
  • Under the Student menu select Prepare for Registration
  • Select the term when you are starting classes and click on Continue
  • You will now see the date you can register for courses

The academic schedules for all 3 terms (spring/summer, fall, and winter) are available in mid-February every year. Time-tickets will be made viewable on UR Self-Service in early February every year for all 3 terms.

* Your time-ticket tells you the first day/time you can register for courses. Each student receives a single time-ticket that applies to all terms open for registration. You can register in each term from that date to the add/drop date of the selected term. If you log into UR Self-Service and do not see your time-ticket, it may be too early and will be posted closer to the registration opening for that year. If you were admitted after the final time ticket day listed in the Registration Dates, you will not need a time ticket to register.

Students are responsible for the accuracy of their registration.

For more information, refer to the Registration Time-Ticket section in the Undergraduate Calendar.

Steps to Registration

Step 1: Review Your Program Outline

Each program at the U of R has a program outline listing every course required to earn your specific degree, diploma, or certificate.

Program outlines can be found in Degree Audit or the Undergraduate Calendar (sorted by faculty). We recommend that you print or screenshot your program outline to use as a reference during course registration.

Your faculty or department may have additional resources such as course sequencing suggestions. Find this information on the faculty webpages or by contacting your Academic Advisor.

Step 2: Build Your Schedule

Visual Schedule Builder (VSB) is the software system that you use to find classes and plan your schedule. Note: VSB is not a registration tool.

Use VSB to search for your required classes (as per your program outline) - make sure you are searching within the correct academic terms. You can select, deselect, search again, or start over as many times as you like. You can also save your favourite potential schedules and review again later.

Capture digitally or in writing the Course Registration Numbers (CRNs) for the classes that you want to register in. CRNs are a 5-digit number sequence and are listed beside the shopping cart in VSB. You use these numbers to formally for courses in UR Self-Service.

Step: 3 Register for Classes

Once you find the classes and schedule you want, formally register for them using UR Self-Service, using the CRNs (5-digit numbers) that you found in VSB.

  1. Log into UR Self-Service.
  2. Click on Student Menu.
  3. Click on Add or Drop Classes, under Registration.
  4. Select a Term.
  5. Click on Enter CRNs.
  6. Enter your CRN in the CRN field. Click Add Another CRN to add more than one.
  7. Click on Add to Summary.
  8. In the Summary tab, make sure the Action is set to "Register" for the class(es), then click Submit. The classes will then appear in your Summary and Schedule Details as Registered.

You will need to repeat these steps for each term you are registering for classes in.

Step 4: View Your Schedule
  1. Log into UR Self-Service.
  2. Click on Add or Drop Classes, under Registration. Your detailed class schedule can be seen in Schedule Details.
  3. You can also quickly view what courses you have registered for in your Student Profile. Be sure to select the correct term.

Class Sections Requiring Special Approval
Some class sections require special approval from the faculty. Please refer to the course descriptions for details on these approvals. You can register in these courses by contacting your Academic Advising Office.
Registration Errors

If an error message appears after you click on Submit, it means there are restrictions or conditions such as prerequisites on the class that prevent you from registering. If you meet the requirements for the class, but still see an error message, please contact your Academic Advising Office for assistance.

The explanation of the restriction is under the status column. Sometimes special permission can be obtained to override the restriction or error.

To obtain special permission:

  1. Fill out the Registration Permit/Override form (PDF), which is also available at your Academic Advising Office.
  2. Return the completed form to your Academic Advising Office.
  3. Check Prepare to Register in UR Self-Service regularly to see if the permission has been granted.
  4. If the permission is received, the Permit Override will appear in Prepare to Register and you may add the class yourself online.
