My academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Saskatchewan – Great Distinction (2000), a Master of Science in Nursing from Norwich University, Vermont- Cum Laude (2009), and a doctoral degree from the University of Saskatchewan, College of Medicine, Health Sciences program (2021). I love nursing and the personal and professional opportunities it has provided me over the years. I have worked in various community settings. These include public health, communicable disease control, northern/remote nursing, forensic nursing (correctional nursing and as a coroner), teaching forensic programming for Mt. Royal University (Calgary), and community development/programming. I believe in staying curious, a relational nursing practice, the collective nursing voice, finding joy in every day, and the power of kindness and humility. My research areas include dignified, safe, end-of-life care practices for individuals with life-limiting illnesses, their families, and health care providers, including research related to medical assistance in dying.
Additionally, I am interested in the factors that support student success and successful transition to post-secondary nursing education. I live in Saskatoon with my husband, Peter. We enjoy traveling to various corners of the globe and spending time at the family cabin.

Current Research

Dr. Janine Brown is currently exploring the perspectives and experiences of individuals living with MS concerning medical assistance in dying. The project objectives are to 1) outline how, where and when participants obtain information regarding MAID and describe their information preferences, 2) reveal the interactions, communication, and experiences of participants when discussing MAID with others, 3) explore the reasons for which ILMS may or may not consider MAID, 4) identify potential improvements in how MAID is accessed and explored, and 5) explore any gender or socioeconomic differences in participants' needs, information preferences, and experiences.

Dr. Janine Brown is currently exploring the experiences and needs of funeral care providers in supporting individuals and families before, during, and after a MAID death. The objectives are the project are to 1) identify the experience in caring for individuals and families before, during, and after a MAID death, 2) identify the needs of and supports required by funeral care professionals as they work with individuals and families, 3) identify opportunities to improve MAID care to individuals and families before, during and after a MAID death.
