September Russell
September Russell completed her MA in Music Theory at the University of Regina and her PhD in Music Theory at the University of Toronto. A music educator by training, she teaches Music Theory and Music History at the University of Regina and the Regina Conservatory of Performing Arts. Since 2011 she has had the privilege of working as a teaching musician for the National Arts Centre’s Arts Alive program which brings music-making workshops to communities across Canada. Through this program, September has partnered with and learned from inspiring Saskatchewan Indigenous artists including Jacob Pratt and Zoey Roy, and has worked with communities across Southern Saskatchewan and Alberta.
Her academic research focuses on analysis of post-tonal musics, musical form in the twentieth century, and the experience of time in music. She has presented her research nationally and internationally at the annual meetings of the Society for Music Theory, the Society for Music Analysis, the Form Forum, the American Musicological Society, St. Lawrence Chapter, and the Canadian University Music Society. Her dissertation Passé recompose: Neoclassical Sonata Form in Interwar France examines sonata form in early twentieth-century French chamber works, and proposes a system of melodic formal functions as a method for analysis of a wide range of post-tonal music. Her current projects include an article on melodic formal functions and an examination of Francis Poulenc’s use of vocal genres in his instrumental works.
