Physical Activity Epidemiology
Epidemiology is the study of the distribution, determinants and deterrents of health, disease and injury in human populations. The mission of the PA-Epi Lab is to examine and monitor the frequency and patterns of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour (SB) in the population, identify determinants and deterrents to these behaviours, and investigate the relationships between PA and/or SB and health and disease.
Members of the PA-Epi lab are interested in exploring PA and SB in both healthy and clinical populations and sub-populations, across the lifespan from childhood through to older adulthood, in association with cardiometabolic, psychosocial, and health-related quality of life outcomes. Answers to unique research questions are sought both using large pre-existing databases for secondary analyses, as well as through primary data collection. Through our research, public outreach activities and advocacy around issues related to PA, SB, fitness, obesity, and health we aim to contribute to public health interventions and ultimately to improved population health.
The graduate program introduces students to population-based studies of PA and SB and health and disease outcomes, and provides students with advanced study in PA and SB measurement, study design, and analysis of relationships with specific health and disease states. The lab houses student computers and workspace, as well as a research participant interview space and clinical testing room. Equipment is available for the measurement of PA and SB, as well as analysis of body composition and other cardiometabolic outcomes.
Funding is currently available for graduate students. Opportunities also for Honours student projects.
