Frequently Asked Questions about the RBD

Are there any opt-in requirements for the Really BIG Deal?

You must be eligible to live in residence and be a registered student studying at the U of R.

How much am I going to save if I opt into the Really BIG Deal?

Potential savings range from $5,000 to $18,000 for a domestic student over a four-year period.

For international students, potential savings can range from $7,500 to $21,000 over a four-year period.

How does the payment work? At what point during the term will the credit be placed in my account?

Full tuition and residence fees will be assessed and applied to your student account at the beginning of the term. After the last date to drop a class without a refund, a “package credit” will be calculated and applied to your student account to offset any increases in tuition and fees.

For the Fall term, this “package credit” will be applied to your student account by the end of October. For the Winter term, by the end of February, and for the Spring/Summer term, the credit will be applied by the end of September.

What if I transfer faculties?
If you transfer faculties or change to a degree program that is a different tuition rate, your account will be adjusted to the new tuition rate but locked in at the rate of the year in which you joined the savings program.
What if I am a federated college student?
This program is the same for all students, regardless of their home faculty, college, or campus. Students from Campion College, First Nations University of Canada, and Luther College are encouraged to opt in for the Really Big Deal at any time during their studies.
Can students transferring from another post-secondary institution take part?
Transfer students can take part in this program. The earlier you transfer to the University of Regina and take advantage of the Really Big Deal – the more savings you will experience.
I already applied to residence for this year, how do I opt-in?
Log into the Housing Services Portal, go to the Requests and Forms page and complete the Really Big Deal Opt-In Form.
Can I opt-in in any year?

Yes, eligible tuition and fees will be locked in at the rate in effect when you opt-in to the program.

The earlier you opt-in to the program the greater savings you will experience.

How does this work with UR Priority?
UR Priority is a transitional program for first-year students living in residence that is designed to help make the transition between high school and university a little easier. All first-year students living in residence are automatically part of UR Priority and it doesn’t impact the Really Big Deal.
Am I able to opt-out?
Yes, you can opt out once per term. Go to the Requests and Forms page in the Housing Services Portal to complete the Really Big Deal Opt Out Form. To return to the Really Big Deal in the future, you will need to reach out to the Housing and Hospitality Services team.
What happens if I decide I don’t want to live in residence anymore?
If you leave residence by choice, or if you leave due to non-compliance with your residence contract, your participation in the Really Big Deal will be cancelled and your tuition rates will move to the current tuition rates at the beginning of the next term.
How many credit hours do I have to be registered in?
The Really Big Deal is for full-time students. If you qualify to live in residence, then you qualify for the Really Big Deal.
Can I defer?
No, the Really Big Deal starts when you move into residence.
What if I have to leave residence for a term?
Breaks in residence will be allowed for co-op work selections, exchange programs, internships, practicums, and any other approved University leave.
Do I have to pay for all four years at once?
No, your residence fees and your academic tuition and fees will remain due and payable at the beginning each academic term.
How do I exit my Really Big Deal contract? What are the consequences?
Fill out the form on the Housing Services Portal under Requests and Forms. Note that leaving the Really Big Deal means your tuition will return to full rates at the beginning of the next term.
Do I have to live in residence all year long?
No, breaks for the spring/summer term and for University approved leaves mean that many students will live in residence for only eight months of the year.
How will this affect student loans?
The Really Big Deal has no impact on student loans.
Are international students eligible for the Really Big Deal?
Yes! As an International student you can be confident of the cost of your Tuition and Residence over the course of your studies (up to five years) as long as you remain part of it the Really Big Deal.
