Post-Defense

Successfully defending your thesis is a major milestone, but there are still a number of requirements you must complete before being eligible to graduate.

Immediately following your defense:

  • Committee members provide any recommended/required revisions to the candidate or the candidate’s supervisor.
  • You may request the External Examiner’s evaluation of the thesis via email grad.defense@uregina.ca

Make Your Final Revisions:

After a successful defense, you have until the end of the following term* to complete any revisions that may have been required at your defense . If you do not submit the revised post-defense thesis within this time frame, additional registration may be required. Even if your examining committee passed your thesis without revisions you must change/review the following:

  • The date on the title page: Month and year you email your thesis to FGSR for Library Approval
  • Your thesis follows the required format
  • If your Abstract includes symbols or non-text notations, please email a plain text or Word version with your final submision
*Please note the post-defense revisions deadline for Spring Convocation is March 31 and the deadline for Fall Convocation is July 31. Please review the Deadlines page for more information.

Submit for Library Approval:

The following is a general outline of the processing and preparation of Electronic Theses (ETD) for library access:
  1. If you haven't already done so, apply for graduation
  2. Confirm library permission and licences by completing the online form.
  3. Email your revised, post-defense thesis as a PDF document to FGSR at grad.defense@uregina.ca
  4. Your supervisor must confirm via email to grad.defense@uregina.ca that all required revisions are complete.
  5. FGSR will review the thesis and FGSR upload to the Archer Library's oURspace.
  6. FGSR will notify you via email when your thesis has been approved by the Library
  7. The Library holds the thesis until the student is awarded their degree by Executive of Council.
  8. The Library will then catalogue the thesis and approve for release on oURspace.
  9. Library and Archives Canada's Thesis Portal harvests theses on oURspace.
  10. FGSR will receive confirmation that the e-thesis has been uploaded to Archives Canada via the Archer Library's Collection.

To Delay Publication of Your Thesis

Theses produced for higher education are made publicly available via the University Library. However, you may wish to request that publication be delayed if any of the following circumstances apply:

  • Time is required for completion and submission of a significant manuscript or patent application for a device or idea that might emerge from the thesis research.
  • The thesis describes something of considerable monetary potential which could, if you were given an opportunity to develop it, benefit you or the University.
  • Funding for the research was provided by a commercial company which has requested a delay in publication.
  • The thesis deals with a potentially dangerous product or process, or potential cure for a disease, for which you need more testing time before public release of the information.
  • The duration of the Request for Confidentiality of a Thesis will be 12 months from the date; the request is approved by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. Extensions will be granted only in exceptional circumstances and will require a new Request for Confidentiality of a Thesis form to be submitted at least one month prior to the completion of the current agreement.
The student submits a Request for Confidentiality of a Thesis and provides evidence to justify the delay in the publication of a thesis. The request will be considered by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research who will notify the student and supervisor of the decision. If approved, FGSR will include the Request for Confidentiality with the post-defense thesis submitted for Library Approval to ensure the Libary delays making the thesis publically available.
