General Information

Semester System

Fall – September – December

Winter – January – April

Spring – May-June (6 weeks)

Summer – July-August (6 weeks)

*Some engineering-specific classes are offered May-August (13 weeks)

Course Types
In Person – Regularly scheduled meeting times held face-to-face and on-campus.
Online – Few or no scheduled meeting times (held virtually). Learning/assignments are done on your own time through UR courses.
Hybrid – Regularly scheduled meeting times that can be attended in person or virtually but you MUST choose one or the other.
Hyflex – Regularly scheduled meeting times that can be attended in person or virtually and you can change your format at will whenever you like.
Live-Streamed – Regularly scheduled meeting times held virtually over a platform such as Zoom.

General Course Formats
Lecture – Most courses consist of lectures given by the instructor. The size of a first year lecture class varies anywhere between 12-200 students.
Seminar – Large lecture classes sometimes break into small groups to allow for further discussion of course material.  Some engineering-specific courses have a seminar attached to it.
Lab – A course that requires practical work may have a lab portion. Some courses in geography, languages, math, computer science, and natural sciences have labs.  Most engineering-specific courses have labs attached to it.

Credit hours and Course Load

Most courses are worth 3.0 credit hours.  A maximum course load is 15.0 credit hours (5 classes) in the Fall and Winter terms.  To be considered a full-time student you must be registered in 9.0 credit hours.

Major in Engineering

Most students are accepted as an “Engineering General” student and declare their major after completing 8 of 10 of Term 1 & 2 courses.  Students must complete ENGG 100, ENGG 123, ENGG 140 and ENGL 100 plus four other classes to submit their Major Declaration Form.

Minor or Concurrent Program in Engineering

Although all Engineering Programs are quite prescribed and have very little room for adding a minor or Concurrent Program, it can be done….with permission.  Please discuss your academic plans with an academic advisor to see if adding a minor or Concurrent Program is right for you.

Transfer Credit

If you have previously attended a post-secondary institution it is possible that you may be able to receive transfer credits towards your engineering degree.  All transfer credits are now processed through the Transfer Credit Office.  Please contact them directly for further information at transfer.credit@uregina.ca or 306-585-4115.

Degree Audit

The Degree Audit is a tool designed to help you plan your academic career.  It lists all required classes that you need to complete your degree, shows your PGPA, allows you to plan and view your accomplishments (and required repeats) quickly and easily.

Program Sheets

All Program Sheets are available for viewing online.  They are a great resource to have that list course requirements for your particular program and pre-requisites.

What is a pre-requisite?

A pre-requisite is a requirement that a student must complete before being eligible to register in the subsequent course.  Because Engineering is such a prescriptive program, sometimes students may get permission to take a course for which they do not have the required pre-requisite.  Approval of pre-requisite waiver requests are based on special cases only.

Registering for Courses

Search for available courses using the Visual Schedule Builder. Once you have checked your Program Sheet and know what courses you want to register in, use your UR Self-Service account to register. Students register in priority sequence according to their time ticket, which is based on total earned credit hours (including transfer credit).

Troubleshooting – Why can’t I register?

Have you accepted your offer? (Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents)

  1. Have you submitted your documents? (International Students with Study Permits)
  2. Have you checked your UR Self-Service account for your time ticket or holds?
  3. Are you following the correct steps for registration?
  4. Error message? Check the Registrar’s Office webpage for potential causes and solutions!
  5. Still having trouble? Watch our Registration Videos Playlist or contact an academic advisor for further support!

Student Loan forms are signed by Financial Services after the first week of the semester.

General Registration Information

Before you can register for classes, you have to accept your offer!  Here’s how:

New domestic students (Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents) accept their offer through Enrolment Services.

New international students (Students with Study Permits) do not need to accept their offer, however must ensure that all required documents are submitted and a $500 tuition deposit is received.  (UR International)

Access Your UR Self-Service Account

The link can be found by selecting "Current Students" from the green bar along the top of the main UofR homepage, then scroll down all the way until you reach the green section.  Select "UR Self-Service" from the Current Students list. Check Your Time Ticket and Holds

Once you have access to your UR Self-Service account, you can find your time ticket and holds under Student Services > Registration > Check Your Registration Status > Select Term. Time tickets are based on your credit hours earned (including transfer credit) and students with a higher number of credit hours will have earlier time tickets. Your holds indicate restrictions on your specific account. Note that not all holds affect your ability to register. Financial Holds, Study Permit Holds, Documents Holds, Academic Probation Holds, and Qualifying Program Holds will prevent you from registering before you address your hold. If you have questions about your holds, contact an Academic Advisor.

Build a Conflict-Free Schedule

Watch the Student Success registration videos playlist about the resources available to help you with your course registration. Before you build a schedule, you’ll want to review your program requirements. If you require specific information about your program (including transfer credit) it’s a good idea to talk to an Academic Advisor in the Faculty of Engineering & Applied Science.

Once you have checked your appropriate Program Sheet for the courses you need to take, you can use the Visual Schedule Builder to review course availability and potential schedule combinations for your upcoming semester. You’ll want to make sure you’re building a conflict-free schedule (room in the course or wait list, have prerequisites, not choosing a restricted section, no time conflicts, no holds, etc.). You’ll also want to make sure you’re paying attention to course formats (In Person, Online, Hybrid, Hyflex, Live-Streamed, and Blended/Multiple Methods).

How to use VSB manual is found here:

Visual Schedule Builder Manual

Information for Parents and Family

Engineering is an extremely demanding academic program. Students in the program typically spend well over 40 hours per week on classes, labs, assignments, and studying. The labs associated with the courses are particularly important, as they provide hands-on learning for our students, so it is critical that they attend these. Because of the challenging nature of the program, it is very important for our students to have the support of their families.

As a parent or family member, you should be aware of the many resources available for students. We encourage you to take some time to explore our website and learn about these resources. In addition, there are a number of events that parents and family are often interested in attending, such as "What is Engineering?", Convocation, Fourth-Year Project Day. Even though it can be demanding, meeting the challenges of an engineering program provides students and their families with a deep sense of accomplishment!

Also visit Parents and Families for more information on U of R resources for parents and family members of U of R students.
