Awards Glossary

Academic Achievement: Unless otherwise stated, academic achievement means an average of 75% or higher.

Athletic Award: Funding for students who participate in USPORT competition. Athletic awards will appear on a student's transcript.

Bursary: Based primarily on financial need. Some bursaries may have additional criteria. Bursaries do not appear on a student's transcript.

Continuing Awards: For students who have already completed at least one semester at the University of Regina.

Direct Entrance: Refers to applicants applying for admission to the next semester after high school graduation; usually this means they are graduating in February or June and applying for admission to the Fall/September semester.

Disability: Students with disabilities who take a reduced course load may still be eligible for award consideration provided they are registered with the Centre for Student Accessibility. The course reduction will depend on each student's situation.

Entrance Awards: For students who will be attending the University of Regina for the first time in the upcoming Fall term.

Financial Need: When financial need is a criterion for an award, applicants must complete the financial need assessment section of the undergraduate application form.

Grade Point Averages: There are several different GPAs that are used by the University of Regina.

  • Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA): Based on all University of Regina courses taken, whether passed or failed, repeated or not.
  • Program Grade Point Average (PGPA): Calculated according to UGPA rules, but is based only on the courses that are used in a particular program. Refer to the rules on repeating courses in the Undergraduate Calendar.
  • Sessional Grade Point Average (SGPA): Based on all University of Regina courses taken during the prior academic year (May 1 - April 30). This includes the Spring/Summer, Fall and Winter terms in sequential order.
  • Term Grade Point Average (TGPA): Calculated according to CGPA rules, and is based on all courses taken in a particular semester (Fall, Winter or Spring/Summer).
  • Undergraduate Grade Point Average (UGPA): Based on all University of Regina courses taken, but when a course has been repeated, only the grade in the most recent approved attempt is used (refer to the rules on repeating courses in the Undergraduate Calendar).
Prize: A reward for academic merit and will appear on a student transcript. Most prizes do not have a monetary value

Registration: Unless otherwise stated, a requirement to be "registered in..." indicates the minimum number of credit hours the recipient of an award must be registered in the semester in which the scholarship is paid. If no statement about registration is made, registration in at least 9 credit hours is required.

Residence: Unless otherwise stated, a requirement to be "resident in..." means that the candidate must have lived in the stated location for a minimum of twelve (12) consecutive months immediately preceding the date of application for the award.

SAMS: SAMS is the online Student Awards Management System. SAMS can be used two ways:
  • Public search page: Anyone can browse the entire awards inventory, see award values, eligibility criteria and application deadlines without logging in.
  • Secure log in page: U of R students can register to use the secure SAMS site to see their own academic information, apply online for awards, and see a summary of past awards received.
Scholarship: Awarded primarily on academic merit. Some scholarships may include other criteria such as community service or financial need. Scholarships will appear on a student's transcript.

Year of Study: Some descriptions of undergraduate scholarship and bursaries refer to "year of study"; unless otherwise stated this should be interpreted as follows:

  • Year 1: refers to students who successfully completed 0-23 credit hours
  • Year 2: refers to students who successfully completed 24-53 credit hours
  • Year 3: refers to students who successfully completed 54-83 credit hours
  • Year 4: refers to students who successfully completed 84-113 credit hours
  • Year 5: refers to students who successfully completed 114-143 credit hours
  • Beyond 5th year: refers to students who have successfully completed 144 or more credit hours.
