Co-operative Education and Internships

Programs

Co-operative Education & Internship Programs offer opportunities for students to gain paid work experience related to their field. Students in the U of R Co-operative Education Program alternate between semesters of academic study and paid work terms.

  • In comparison, the U of R Internship Program requires students to complete a 12 or 16 month placement in Engineering or Actuarial Science.
  • While Co-op allows you to work for a semester at one employer, then go back to class, then work again for another employer, etc., an internship only allows you one placement for either twelve or sixteen months with only one employer. You can work for a longer period of time to fully understand the nature of the job, allow for completion of projects, etc.
  • Students who have completed their third year of their program, are eligible for internship in Engineering and Actuarial Science.
  • Many employers prefer to hire students for longer periods of time as a "on-the-job interview" for future permanent employment.
  • For international opportunities, visit UR International - Global Internships.

Questions to Consider before Applying:

  • Are you in a and spoken with your faculty advisor?
  • If you are an International Student? Have you applied for International work permit?
  • Have you reviewed general application guidelines from the Academic Calendar?

Co-op Work Permits

International Students are required to have a Valid Co-op Work Permit to go on a work term.

International Students are required to have a Valid Co-op Work Permit to go on a work term.

Due to lengthy processing times with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), International students must have applied for a permit at least six months prior to applying for Co-op. NO EXCEPTIONS! (You will need to attach your work permit when you submit your application to the Co-op program.)

It is recommended that students apply for their work permit –at least 6 months prior to starting a work term to ensure that the permit arrives in time. For example, if you are planning on starting a work term in May, you should apply for your permit a year in advance, but no later than September of the year prior to starting your term. Students' eligibility to work off campus, according to paragraph R186(f), (v), or (w) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, does not replace the requirement of a Co-op Work Permit.

IRCC requires a Letter of Support from CESL. To request this letter, please send an email with your name, student # and Faculty to Coop.Office@uregina.ca .

Visa Application Workshops are offered by UR International all year. Please check UR International's Events Calendar for more information.
