Are you passionate about movies? Discover hands-on filmmaking with our certificate in Film Production program!
Our certificate program will introduce you to the fundamentals of film production, with courses covering many aspects of filmmaking. You will learn the elements of screenwriting, directing, cinematography, sound recording, and editing, The program also includes courses in film studies, offering insights into the history, theory, and analysis of motion pictures.
This certificate may be of interest if you have a bachelor’s degree in another field and are interested in pursuing further studies, or if you are looking for a program shorter than a four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
What is Film Production?
Film production is the study of the principles and creative elements required to make films. Through hands-on experiential learning, students will explore the fundamentals of the filmmaking process and learn how to operate specialized equipment such as cameras, lighting and grip gear, sound recorders, and computer software used for editing.
Some film production courses at the U of R include:
FILM 100 - The Art of Motion Pictures
An introduction to the art of motion pictures. The course will examine a representative selection of films covering the history of cinema and many of its basic aesthetic premises.
FILM 201 - Production 1
The course focuses on the development of practical techniques in dramatic film production.
FILM 209 - Technical Fundamentals
The course provides technical fundamentals for students entering film production, with a focus on developing solid technical understandings of cameras, lenses, lighting, audio, and editing.
FILM 305 - Cinematography
A study of the electronic and photochemical imaging techniques, and lighting, for film.
FILM 312 - Advanced Digital Effects
The course focuses on the creation of digital effects in post-production. Students will work with software like Adobe Photoshop, After Effects and Premier, among other software tools.
