Creative Practice

Are you a creative with an interest in Film and Film Production, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts, Creative Technologies and Design, or a combination of these fields? The Certificate in Creative Practice is an interdisciplinary program designed to help you explore and develop your emerging talents in one or more creative areas.

The Certificate in Creative Practice is an excellent starting point if you’re interested in pursuing a degree within the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance but haven’t chosen a specific path yet. Once you complete the certificate, you can transfer all the credits you’ve earned directly into a University of Regina degree program. This means you can continue your education without losing any progress!

What is Creative Practice?

The Creative Practice program offers you the flexibility to explore studio spaces and course offerings in Film and Film Production, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts, and Creative Technologies and Design. You'll immerse yourself in highly creative environments and gain valuable hands-on learning experiences.

In addition to in-studio courses, the program also covers foundational skills in university writing and research as well as sensitivity to Indigenous issues in the arts.

Some of the course options available at the U of R include:

MAP 209 - Decolonization and the Arts

Students will identify and challenge existing colonial structures across the globe. They will engage in proactive and informed discussions of contemporary art to better decode power structures gaining a deeper more inclusive understanding of cultural experiences. To facilitate sharing personal stories and histories, dialogue from multiple perspectives will be encouraged.

THTR100 – Introduction to Theatre

An introduction to the various aspects of theatre including performance and production, the play script, history, theory and criticism.

ART 260 - Introduction to Ceramics

Studio course introducing the material of clay within the context of contemporary ceramics practices. Students will learn basic making techniques, focusing on hand-building and will also be exposed to the potter’s wheel, glazing, kiln loading and firing.

CTCH 216 - 3D Animation: Art, Social Media

An online real-time interactive software intensive course that addresses digital art, design, DE animation and modeling. 

MU 399AA - Creating Music with Technology

Learn to write and perform music using commercial, open-source and DIY audio tools with the computer. This course is designed to be useful to students regardless of literacy in music reading and notation, and welcomes students of varied experience and background in music, creative sound and computers.

What clubs, groups, or societies do students participate in?
Media, Art, and Performance students can join MAPSS, a student society for those studying creative technologies, film, music, theatre, and visual arts. There are also Department and program-specific groups, such as the Film Students’ Association or the Ceramic Student Society. Additionally, students can participate in the multiple clubs and activities through the University of Regina Students’ Union (URSU).
What is the difference between the Certificate in Creative Practice and the Certificate in Media, Art, and Performance?

Certificate in Creative Practice (18 credit hours)

This program allows students to develop their creative talents in specific areas. It includes foundational courses in university writing, research, and Indigenous issues in the arts. The credits can be transferred into a Media, Art, and Performance degree program, making it a great option for those considering further studies.

Certificate in Media, Art, and Performance (30 credit hours)

If you’re looking for a broader introduction to the arts, this program provides a well-rounded foundation across multiple creative disciplines. You’ll gain essential university skills while exploring different areas of media, art, and performance. The certificate can also be applied toward BA and BFA degrees in the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance.
