Animation

Immerse yourself in animation through our certificate program.

The certificate in Animation provides a well-rounded introduction to animation. As a student, you will study the basic principles and technical components while using your imagination to tell compelling stories. You will explore several different types of animation, such as two-dimensional (2D), three-dimensional (3D), stop motion, and post-production visual effects. You will also become familiar with some animation software and tools.

The certificate program is a great option if you are interested in pursuing a career in animation, you have a degree in another field and are interested in pursuing further studies, or you prefer a program shorter than a four-year bachelor’s degree.

Due to course scheduling, completion of this certificate may take up to three years.

What is Animation?

Animation creates an illusion of movement through a series of still images, or frames, that are displayed at 24 frames per second. Animators create these frames using drawings, known as traditional or classical animation, stop motion animation, and computer-generated images (CGI).

Some of the courses offered at the U of R include:

FILM 203 - Animation

An introduction to basic principles, technical knowledge and a variety of animation techniques related to non-cell animation.

FILM 303 - Advanced Animation

An advanced exploration of the animated image, bringing together diverse and traditional digital approaches including audio.

FIM 312 - Advanced Digital Effects

The course focuses on the creation of digital effects in post-production. Students will work with software like Adobe Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere, among other software tools.
