Holds
A hold is a restriction placed on a student’s UR Self-Service account that may:
- indicated some type of academic tracking has been initiated;
- prevent class registration;
- prevent the release of transcripts;
- prevent a student from graduating; or
- all of the above.
Some examples of the types of holds that may be placed on a student’s record are:
- Conditions on Registration: This type of hold means that there are conditions that must be verified or met prior to registration. Students can contact the Academic Advising Office of the faculty, federated college, or academic unit for assistance with this type of hold.
- Financial Hold: Depending on the amount, a student that has a tuition or fee balance owing will have restrictions on the release of transcripts and degree parchments or may have restrictions preventing class registration.

- Admissions Hold: There are documents or other requirements that must be received by the university prior to registration or release of transcripts.
Domestic students may contact Enrolment Services for assistance.
International students on a study permit may contact UR International Enrolment Services for assistance.
- Letter of Permission (LP) Hold: This type of hold does not restrict a student from engaging in any university activities (registration, transcripts, etc.). It is an indication that a student has an outstanding Letter of Permission to complete.
- Academic Hold: An academic hold is applied to a student’s account when some type of academic action has been applied. Some examples of academic holds are Requirement to Discontinue (RTD), Must Withdraw (MW), and Academic Probation.
Students can contact the Academic Advising Office of the faculty, federated college, or academic unit for assistance with a hold as a result of an academic action.
- Disciplinary Proceedings: In some cases, an academic hold will be applied if a student is under investigation for an act of Academic Misconduct. This type of hold is called a Disciplinary Proceedings Hold.
