  5. 5 FREE, fun, winter fitness activities for U of R students

The winter can feel long – but the University of Regina’s Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport (CKHS) embraces the chill with FREE fitness-related offerings for U of R students. If you’re looking for ways to stay active while the snow is still on the ground, CKHS has you covered. Here are five fun ways that you can get your heart pumping, your blood flowing and your body warmed up.

Go for a skate on the ODR

The University’s outdoor rink (ODR), located on the outdoor basketball courts on the southeast corner of the main campus, is open 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. daily, weather-permitting. It’s free to access for everyone, including the general public.

If you don’t have skates, you can rent some from the Facilities Services desk in CKHS for $2 per pair (cash only). If your own skates are dull, the team there can sharpen them for $5 (cash only).

Borrow snowshoes

The city has seen a lot of snow this year. What better way to make the most of it than with snowshoes?

The Facilities Services desk has snowshoes available for U of R students to borrow. Just bring your student card to check out a pair and you’re ready to venture off the beaten paths around campus.

Take a winter walk in Wascana

The University of Regina is located in Wascana Park, which boasts nearly 10 km of paved pathways that are shovelled and maintained throughout the winter months.

If you’re looking for some fresh air and perspective, why not go for a walk around the lake?

Visit the Fitness and Lifestyle Centre

Rather workout indoors until the temperature starts to climb?

Access to the Fitness and Lifestyle Centre on the second floor of CKHS is included in U of R student fees. All you need to do is bring your student card for the attendants to scan and you’ll be able to use the track, the weights and all of the other equipment.

It’s open 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. on weekends. Members of the public can use these facilities for a fee.

Drop by Gyms 1 and 2

Prefer to shoot some hoops? Maybe play some floor hockey?

Gyms 1 and 2 have U of R student drop-in times. To find out when they’re available, pop by the Facilities Services desk, or give the team a call at 306-585-4366.
