Awards and Scholarships

There are numerous awards and scholarships from professional societies and organizations available to our undergraduate and graduate students.

Some of the awards regularly received by our students include the APEGS Geoscience Gold Medal, the Geological Association of Canada Student Prize, the Mineralogical Association of Canada Undergraduate Student Award, the Geography Book Prize, the John Lewry Award in Geology, the L.W. Vigrass Prize in Geology, the Gerry Handford Memorial Award, the W.A. Gordon Prize in Geology, the Robert Milner Award, and the D.M. Kent Consulting Geological Ltd. Prize in Sedimentary Geology.

Many of our students are also winners of the best posters in the annual Saskatchewan Geological Survey Open House as well as other geoscientific conferences.

Undergraduate Student Awards

The Department of Earth Sciences has many scholarship opportunities available to undergraduate students. Below is a list of awards targeted specifically to students enrolled in programs offered by the Department.

Entrance Awards

Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS) Entrance Bursary (Geology)

1 award ($3000)

Deadline 15 March, application required

The bursary will be presented to a University of Regina entering student who meets the following criteria:

  • Entering the Faculty of Science degree program in Geology or Environmental Geoscience;
  • Registered and remains registered in a minimum of 9 credit hours in the semester the bursary is presented;
  • Demonstrated financial need; and
  • Preference to a student who is self-declared Indigenous

Note: The student recipient must agree to have their contact information (phone number and email) shared with the Donor.  The student recipient must be willing to be highlighted in the Donor's newsletter, website and other communications vehicles.

Continuing Awards

30 by 30 APEGS Award for Women in Geoscience

1 award ($3200)

Deadline 3 October, application required

The award will be presented to a University of Regina undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in the Faculty of Science, with a major in Geology or Environmental Geoscience;
  • Has transferred from a previous post-secondary program of study other than Engineering or Geoscience;
  • Must self-identify as a female;
  • Minimum Undergraduate Grade Point Average (UGPA) of 70%; and
  • Registered and remains registered in a minimum of 9 credit hours in the semester the award is presented

Notes:

  • Preference will be given to a student who has not received this award previously.
  • The student recipient must agree to have their contact information (phone number and email) shared with the Donor. The student recipient must be willing to be highlighted in Donor's newsletter, website and other communications vehicles.

Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS) Undergraduate Scholarship

4 awards ($2000)

Deadline 3 October, application required

The scholarship will be presented to a University of Regina undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in any Engineering discipline, or a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology or Environmental Geoscience
  • Registered and remain registered in a minimum of 9 credit hours in the semester the scholarship is presented;
  • Successfully completed a minimum of 23 credit hours;
  • Minimum Undergraduate Grade Point Average (UGPA) of 80%; and
  • Demonstrates leadership qualities through community involvement, and involvement in University activities and volunteerism

Notes:

  • One (1) scholarship will be presented to a Geology or Environmental Geoscience student. Three (3) scholarships will be presented to Engineering students. 
  • The student recipient must agree to have their contact information (phone number and email) shared with the Donor. The student recipient must be willing to be highlighted in the Donor's newsletter, website and other communications vehicles.

Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Sask (APEGS) Gold Medal (Geology)

1 award (medal)

Awarded to a graduating student who is receiving a BSc degree that includes the course requirements necessary for registration with APEGS.

  • The student selected will have best displayed a combination of leadership qualities in University and other activities, and academic achievement throughout his or her program at the University of Regina.
  • Candidates must have a minimum program grade point average (PGPA) of 75%.
  • The Department of Earth Sciences and The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies will select the recipient, basing 70% of the decision on academic standing and 30% of the decision on leadership qualities.

Donald M. Kent Geology Student Travel Award

1 award ($1700)

Deadline 3 October, no application required

Funds are in support of 2nd, 3rd and/or 4th year undergraduate students majoring in Geology to assist in transportation and/or accommodation expenses incurred for field trips.  Funds raised by students will also provide a portion of support of expenses.

D. M. Kent Prize in Sedimentary Geology

1 award ($900) 

Deadline 1 February, no application required

The prize will be presented to a University of Regina undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in the Bachelor of Science with a major in Geology
  • Highest aggregate average in courses on Sedimentary Geology Petrology, Stratigraphy and at least one of Siliciclastic or Carbonate Geology

Geomorphology Book Prize

1 award ($150–$250)

Deadline 1 June, no application required

Awarded to a University of Regina Geology, Environmental Geosciences, or Physical Geography declared major, who has the highest grade in Geography 323 (Geomorphology). The student must be a full-time student, enrolled in 15 credit hours in the semester in which Geography 323 was completed.

Association of Exploration Geochemists Scholarship in Geology

1 award ($4600)

Deadline 29 September

The scholarship will be awarded to a University of Regina graduate student who meets the following criteria:

  • Pursuing a Masters or PhD program in Geology;
  • Admitted as a fully-qualified graduate student;
  • Has achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 80%; and
  • Is registered full-time, a minimum of 6 credit hours (or as defined in the graduate calendar), during the semester the scholarship is awarded

LWV Graduate Scholarship

2 awards ($1350)

Deadline 29 September

The scholarships will be awarded to University of Regina graduate students who meet the following criteria:

  • Canadian citizen/permanent resident;
  • Enrolled in the Faculty of Science, pursuing the field of Petroleum Geology;
  • Student has achieved a minimum of 70% CGPA; and
  • May be awarded to a thesis or course based student
