Exercise Physiology Laboratory

The Exercise Physiology Research Programs within the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies are run under the stewardship of Dr. Patrick Neary and Dr. Darren Candow. The focus of exercise physiology research at the University of Regina includes issues related to ageing and nutrition across the lifespan, nutritional supplementation and resistance training in the aged individual, sport induced concussion (mild traumatic brain injury), central (brain) vs peripheral (muscle) fatigue, and the effects of exercise on cardiovascular function. We are well equipped with state-of-the-art technology for advanced musculoskeletal and cardiovascular testing in both health and disease, with the exercise physiology reseach programs enhancing our teaching and research endeavors at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Our exercise physiology research programs also has extensive interactions and collaborations regionally with the Dr. Paul Schwann Applied Health and Research Centre (U of R), Prairie Cardiac Foundation, the Mosaic Heart Clinic, and Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region. We are also actively collaborating with colleagues at other institutions as well, including the University of Saskatchewan, University of Alberta, University of British Columbia Okanagan, Northumbria University in Newcastle, UK, University of Cape Town, South Africa, and the University of Applied Sciences in Remagen, Germany. Our research is funded by Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF), the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, and RIVAL-US sports nutritional products.
