Security Advisory
Windows 7 End of Life
Description
Individuals and units are advised to start planning to replace or upgrade any systems still running Windows 7 as soon as possible. Microsoft will no longer provide security fixes or updates to Windows 7 as of January 14, 2020. This greatly increases the likelihood that such systems can be compromised as your computer will be at a greater risk for viruses and malware, which can lead to the loss of data.
Since Microsoft will no longer provide support for Windows 7, Information Services will consider Windows 7 as unsupported software as of January 14, 2020. Any work performed on systems running Windows 7 after the end date is billable at $95/hr which is the standard rate for unsupported software, as described in policy OPS-080-015 regarding supported hardware, software, and mobile devices.
Impact
- EV15 machines
- APEA purchase, A0 or SAL barcode
Resolution
Evergreen systems with a barcode beginning with EV15 are currently running Windows 7. Upgrades of EV15 systems to EV20 systems will commence in January 2020. EV20’s will include Windows 10. No user action is required if you currently have an EV15.
If you have a managed Evergreen computer system with a barcode beginning with EV16, EV17, EV18, or EV19 then you are already running Windows 10 and no action is required.
If you have an unmanaged computer or laptop that is running Windows 7 (i.e. APEA purchase, A0 or SAL barcode) a Windows 10 upgrade is required. You can purchase a license for Windows 10 through SMS. There may be additional costs for data transfer, as well as additional memory installation in order for the older system to run Windows 10.
Be advised that some older computer systems may not run Windows 10 due to hardware compatibility issues and even if they can, it may not run well.
Home systems running Windows 7 are also affected and should be upgraded, particularly if you access any University data requiring privacy protection or extra security.
