Hazardous Waste Disposal
Hazardous waste disposal service is available to University of Regina faculty, staff, and students ONLY.
Hazardous waste includes:- Chemical waste
- Old or expired chemicals
- Glass waste (contaminated and non-contaminated)
- Sharps (contaminated and non-contaminated)
- Human and animal waste (e.g. materials contaminated with blood and body fluids or tissues, organs, carcasses, etc)
- Microbiological waste (e.g. pipette tips, cultures, tubes, etc)
- Radiation waste
Waste Drop-off
Hazardous waste may be dropped off at UR Stores - Research and Innovation Centre (RIC) 110, during regular business hours (Monday to Friday - 8:15 am to 4:30 pm)

Complete the Hazardous Waste Disposal Form and email to Health & Safety at least two business days prior to your hazardous waste drop off.

Hazardous Waste Disposal Procedures
Biological Waste Disposal
Please refer to the Biological Waste Disposal Flowchart (PDF) as a quick reference.
All human, animal, and microorganism material that have been produced, used, or handled at the University of Regina must be disposed of properly.
Incineration
Items that require third-party incineration must be packaged in appropriate containers from UR Stores. Waste disposal pick-up occurs on an as-requested basis. Please e-mail Health & Safety to request waste disposal.

Chemical Waste Disposal
Please refer to the Chemical Waste Procedures Poster (PDF) to ensure waste is packaged properly, labelled with appropriate waste labels, and how to complete a Hazardous Waste Disposal Form.
If you are unsure of the hazard class associated with a particular chemical, refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
Glass Waste Disposal
Please refer to the Glass Waste Poster (PDF) to ensure all glass is disposed of properly.
Please refer to the Empty Bottles & Barcodes Poster (PDF) to ensure disposal of intact glass chemical bottles are disposed of properly.
Under NO circumstances should liquids be placed in glass waste pails. All dried, trace residue contamination must be indicated on the glass waste label.
Human & Animal Waste Disposal
Human and animal waste must ONLY be placed in red plastic pails available at UR Stores. Human and animal waste must be stored in your fridge or freezer until the scheduled waste pick-up time.
Disposals are scheduled on an "as needed" basis. To schedule a waste pick-up, please email Health & Safety.
Microbiological Waste Disposal
Microbiological waste must ONLY be placed in red plastic pails available at Science Stores. Prior to Wednesday, email Health & Safety to advise what waste you are dropping off. Stop by Waste Wednesday to drop off your waste; the Chemical & Lab Safety Advisor will be present to accept the waste and it will be stored in the disposal room until the next BioMed pick-up. Barcodes unique to your Lab are placed on the waste containers.
Sharps Waste Disposal
Contaminated or non-contaminated sharps (such as razor blades, needles, scalpels, small glass shards, etc) must ONLY be placed in the orange or red sharps containers available at UR Stores. Prior to Wednesday, email Health & Safety to advise what waste you are dropping off. Stop by Waste Wednesday to drop off your waste; the Chemical & Lab Safety Advisor will be present to accept the waste and it will be stored in the disposal room until the next BioMed pick-up. Barcodes unique to your Lab are placed on the waste containers.
