Hazardous Waste Disposal

Hazardous waste disposal service is available to University of Regina faculty, staff, and students ONLY.

Hazardous waste includes:
  • Chemical waste
  • Old or expired chemicals
  • Glass waste (contaminated and non-contaminated)
  • Sharps (contaminated and non-contaminated)
  • Human and animal waste (e.g. materials contaminated with blood and body fluids or tissues, organs, carcasses, etc)
  • Microbiological waste (e.g. pipette tips, cultures, tubes, etc)
  • Radiation waste
Waste Wednesdays
Waste drop-offs are every Wednesday at 10:30 am at UR Stores

Complete a Hazardous Waste Disposal Form (Excel Doc) and email to Health & Safety at least two days prior if you would like to drop off waste that week.

Hazardous Waste Disposal Procedures

Biological Waste Disposal

All human, animal, and microorganism material that has been produced, used, or handled at the University of Regina must be disposed of properly. Please refer to the Biological Waste Disposal Flowchart (PDF) for quick reference.

Incineration
Items that require third-party incineration must be packaged in appropriate containers available from Science Stores. Waste disposal pick-up occurs on an as-requested basis - please e-mail Health & Safety to request waste disposal.

Chemical Waste Disposal

Ensure waste is packaged properly and all containers are securely closed. Label the waste with appropriate waste labels (provided by Health & Safety and at Science Stores) - refer to the Chemical Waste Poster (PDF) for details and pictures. Complete the Hazardous Waste Disposal Form (Excel Doc). If you are unsure of the hazard class associated with a particular chemical, refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Email the Hazardous Waste Disposal Form to Health & Safety. Once confirmed, the Chemical & Lab Safety Advisor will coordinate a time to bring down the waste on Waste Wednesday; the waste will be stored in the disposal room until the next pick-up.

Glass Waste Disposal

Please ensure all glass waste is disposed of properly per the instructions laid out in the Glass Waste Poster (PDF). Dispose of intact glass chemical bottles per the instructions in the Empty Bottles & Barcodes Poster (PDF). Absolutely no liquids can be placed in glass waste pails. All dried, trace residue contamination must be indicated on the glass waste label.

Human & Animal Waste Disposal

Human and animal waste must be placed only in the red plastic pails available in UR Stores. Human and animal waste must be stored in your fridge or freezer until the scheduled waste pick-up time. Disposals are only scheduled when needed; email Health & Safety to schedule a disposal.

Microbiological Waste Disposal

Microbiological waste must be placed only in the red plastic pails available in Science Stores. Prior to Wednesday, email Health & Safety to advise what waste you are dropping off. Stop by Waste Wednesday to drop off your waste; the Chemical & Lab Safety Advisor will be present to accept the waste and it will be stored in the disposal room until the next BioMed pick-up. Barcodes unique to your Lab are placed on the waste containers.

Sharps Waste Disposal

Contaminated or non-contaminated sharps (such as razor blades, needles, scalpels, small glass shards, etc) must be placed only in the orange or red sharps containers available in Science Stores. Prior to Wednesday, email Health & Safety to advise what waste you are dropping off. Stop by Waste Wednesday to drop off your waste; the Chemical & Lab Safety Advisor will be present to accept the waste and it will be stored in the disposal room until the next BioMed pick-up. Barcodes unique to your Lab are placed on the waste containers.
