Dean's Message

Phillip Choi

It is with great pleasure that I extend my warm welcome to you for taking the time to read this ENGG newsletter published by the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Regina. The newsletter is a platform that we use to share exciting news and activities taking place in our Faculty with you.

Our Faculty is always committed to providing high quality engineering education to our students and to engaging into cutting-edge research that benefits Saskatchewan, Canada and the world. Our professors are leaders in their respective research areas.

In this issue, we will update you on the status of a research scale microgrid that can produce about 5 MW of electricity using renewable energy. Dr. Irfan Al-Anbagi and Ms. Lisa Vindevoghel will share their work on the microgrid with you. We will also share stories of two of our alumni that sat on our Women in Engineering panel in March.

You will also meet with two of our most recently hired professors. They are Dr. Yogesh Sharma and Dr. Arthur Situm. Dr. Sharma is a clouding computing specialist while Dr. Situm is a nuclear energy researcher focusing on the safety and licencing of small modular reactors.

The systems approach embedded in our undergraduate programs prepare our students well to design innovative engineering solutions that satisfy the increasing needs of society. Such abilities were manifested utterly in this year’s Project Day.

Finally, please mark your calendars for our Faculty’s first Engineering Gala on October 5th, 2024. This year signifies the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science as well as the University of Regina. I look forward to seeing all of you in the Engineering Gala. Meanwhile, enjoy reading the newsletter.

Yours sincerely,

Phillip Choi, PhD, PEng (AB & SK), FCIC, FEIC, FRSC (UK)
