GBUS 600 - Graduate Business Co-op Placement Report
Students enrolled in a work study program will be required to complete a report on their Work Placement.
GBUS 601 - Graduate Business Co-op Placement First Work Term
Students enrolled in a work study semester will be required to register in six credit hours for each of two work semesters in a work placement.

GBUS 801 - Grad Work Term I
This work placement is for students who wish to gain work experience in business or management in Canada. Students will be exposed to the skills used by managers at senior levels in business and management and will perform a variety of tasks.
GBUS 802 - Grad Work Term II
This second work placement is for students who wish to gain work experience in business or management in Canada. Students wil be exposed to the skills used by managers at senior levels in business and management and will perform a variety of tasks.
GBUS 803 - Grad Work Term III
This third work placement is for students who wish to gain work experience in business or management in Canada. Students wil be exposed to the skills used by managers at senior levels in business and management and will perform a variety of tasks.
GBUS 815 - Strategic Management
The course focuses on the identification, evaluation and formulation of organizational strategy in an international context. Special emphasis is placed on inherent tensions faced by global organizations in developing and implementing strategy through the use of lectures, discussion, student analysis, and case studies of various kinds of organizations.
***Prerequisite: Must complete any two courses from the Levene MBA with Specializations program***
GBUS 816 - Production and Operations Management
This course introduces the basic concepts, processes, and problems associated with the Production and Operations Management (POM) function, which is primarily concerned with productivity. Techniques for solving POM problems will be addressed.
GBUS 817 - Managing People in Organizations
This course is designed to develop students’ management skills through an exploration of the theory and practice involved in managing people. The emphasis is on understanding individual, team, and organizational factors and the processes through which they influence behaviour and performance, with a view to improving managerial effectiveness.
GBUS 830 - Business, Government and Society
This course examines ethical and social issues relevant to business management. It includes a multidisciplinary application of knowledge and concepts to contemporary issues challenging business executives, and the role of consultation with local communities and governments, sustainable business practices and evolving global standards of corporate social responsibility and ethics.
GBUS 832 - Accounting for Managers
This course is designed to facilitate the understanding of accounting information with an emphasis on making decisions. Students will be provided an opportunity to enhance their communication, teamwork and decision making skills.
*Note: Levene MBA students cannot receive credit for this course as part of their program requirements.*
GBUS 833 - Corporate Finance
This course provides a comprehensive study of financial decisions in today's business enterprises. Major emphasis is placed on investment, asset valuation and financial structure policies of a firm. Topics include discounted cash flow, capital budgeting, risk-return trade-off, capital structure and major financial instruments.
GBUS 835 - International Business
This course focuses upon opportunities and problems that arise when business operations cross national boundaries. The international business environment is examined, and the tasks of management are integrated into this multinational framework. Students will gain familiarity with various international institutions and practices that impact upon business firms, and students will learn and apply specific models and techniques to aid decision-making in a multinational context.

The course explores the concept and practice of entrepreneurship and its relationship to progress. It analyses the determinants of innovation and develops the skills change managers need to stimulate more entrepreneurship, innovation, enterprise, initiative from their employees.
GBUS 838 - Research Methods in Management
This course is designed to assist students in conducting research projects in the areas of marketing and management. It introduces a variety of research designs, including survey and experimental designs, quantitative methods as well as data analysis and interpretation. Several multivariate techniques will be covered.
GBUS 840 - Strategic Marketing
This course assists the student in developing skills in the creative and systematic use of marketing concepts and strategies. The strategic role of marketing within an organization and its integration with other functional units will be studied. Students are expected to develop a working knowledge of a family of strategic marketing planning processes, concepts, methods, and strategies.
GBUS 841 - International Marketing
This course will introduce the student to environmental factors affecting international marketing and the similarities and differences versus domestic marketing; the knowledge and skills in administering the international marketing function; and evaluation of the impact of recent environmental changes on international marketing.
GBUS 843 - Strategic Human Resource Management
This course examines human resources functions from a strategic and institutional perspective. The topics include human resource planning, recruitment and selection, performance measurement and assessment, training and development, and the design of reward systems.
GBUS 844 - Labour Relations and Collective Bargaining
This course examines the history of union development in Canada, and business reaction to this development. Current structures in the labour movement are assessed, as well as the impact of legislation on the nature of collective bargaining. The course focuses on the character and procedures of arbitration, fact-finding, mediation, and conciliation.
GBUS 845AA - International Study Trip - China
The course examines concepts and current practice related to doing business in an international environment. Emphasis is placed on the business, political, and cultural aspects of China as they relate to Canadian organizations. The course includes a nine day field trip to China for which additional costs apply.

Course is designed to create an understanding of the role of marketing in public and nonprofit organizations, and how marketing in this context differs from marketing in for-profit organizations. The course presents concepts, strategies, and tactics for effectively managing nonprofit environments such as health, education, public services, and the arts.
GBUS 845AD - Conflict Resolution in Employee-Management Relationships
This course involves understanding the nature, origins and state of conflict commonly found within the employment relationship. It identifies the processes that must be put in place to handle conflict appropriately in both unionized and non-unionized environments. Facilitation and negotiation skills will be emphasized.

This course will explore the the connections between mindfulness, leadership and women's leadership. Through directed readings and written essays, a student will conceptualize and critique the theoretical and practical possibilities and implications of mindfulness for women's leadership.
GBUS 845AJ - Crisis Management
The purpose of this course is to introduce the practice of crisis management. More importantly, it will illustrate how management may incorporate crisis management into better planning practices. It will also identify how organizations may benefit from applying crisis management principles.
GBUS 845AK - Business Analytics
This course focuses on teaching students different methods for data driven decision making. Students will learn to apply basic business analytics principles, and effectively use and interpret analytic models to make better business decisions. Topics may include: Descriptive statistical measures, statistical inference, regression analysis, linear and integer optimization, and simulation. Different application areas will be studied through case studies.
GBUS 845AL - A Contemporary Study of Workplace Engagement
This directed readings course will examine workplace engagement. It will involve a critical examination of the workplace engagement literature with a particular focus upon the perspective and implications for minority groups in the workplace. Recommendations for workplace engagement strategies that meet the needs of minority groups will also be explored.
GBUS 845AM - Levene Case Analysis and Competitions
This course provides students practice in cross-functional case analysis to improve presentation skills, develop strategy, team building and management capabilities, and strengthen student abilities to create deliverables under pressure. Potential to travel and network with other graduate students from national and international schools and interaction with senior business leaders.
GBUS 845AN - Indigenous Business Venture Development
This course introduces students to entrepreneurship and economic development and how Indigenous peoples using their lands, financial resources, and benefits, build self–reliance and improve the socio-economic conditions. It explores entrepreneurial opportunities for innovation, growth and development.
GBUS 845AO - Directed Reading. Case Study Course
This course exposes the student to the craft of case study writing and requires the student to write a case study on a real organization, real decision maker and real decision based on primary and secondary data. It also requires the student to learn about the components of an effective teaching note and develop a teaching note to accompany the case.
GBUS 845AP - Understanding Cloud Services
This course will provide students with an intellectual framework for understanding the strategic significance of cloud services, covering the history and development of cloud computing, the analytics that become possible when individuals are tracked at scale and the social, economic, and geo-political consequences of big data. No technical background required.
GBUS 845AQ - Directed Readings in Advanced Organizational Research and Data Analysis
This directed readings course will examine the state of the art in organizational research and data analysis. Topics will cover the areas of methodology such as field research in organizations, multilevel theory, measurement etc., as well as cutting edge statistical approaches in organizational research (e.g., RCM, SEM, big data etc.).
GBUS 845AR - Directed Readings in Judgment and Decision Making
This course examines the literature on the role of thinking styles in the human judgment and decision-making literature. Topics will cover management and psychology literature, with a focus on the mechanisms that produce sound judgment. The course centers on reviews of key papers that yield insights on judgment and decision-making.
GBUS 845AS - Strategic Orientations in Management
This course explores the concept of strategic orientations including market orientation, entrepreneurial orientation, failure learning orientation, innovation orientation, and alliance orientation. The course covers relevant literature examining strategic orientations' impact on competitiveness and firm performance.
GBUS 846AB - Culture and Job Interviewing
To provide the student with an opportunity to explore the theory and application of culture, perception, and the interview process in employee selection. The focus of the course will be on the impact of culture, self-presentation and perception on Interviewing Techniques in cross-cultural situations.
GBUS 846AF - Mentorship and Leadership Development
The course explores the theory and practice of mentorship as a HR function and as an organizational leadership development capacity. Students will learn best practice in establishing an organizational wide mentorship program. The course will also examine leadership development more broadly including evaluation of leadership development initiatives.
GBUS 846AG - Global Perspectives on Labour Relations
This course focuses on the global dimension of work, employment conditions, and labour relations in a comparative context. It examines the development of foreign labour markets and the institutional conditions of employee-employer relations through the lens of migration, corporate social responsibility, trade agreements, globalization, and legal frameworks from select countries.
GBUS 846AH - Program Evaluation
An analysis of the theories and approaches to program evaluation, and their application in organizations. Topics explored will include the origins and current trends, ethical and philosophical issues in evaluation, politics and planning, evaluation criteria, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and strategies for reporting and communicating evaluation results.

GBUS 846AO - Creativity and Leadership
This course focuses upon creative leadership and how that fosters adaptability, change and innovation in people and organizations. It looks at the characteristics of creative leaders as well as problem solving processes that foster creative leadership. Specific practical interventions will also be incorporated to develop creative leadership in students.
GBUS 847AA - Selected Topics in Tobacco Control Policy and Management
This course will encompass study in the area of tobacco control policy and management, particularly in the areas of tobacco marketing and de-marketing. Students will review the current literature in this area and prepare a major research paper.
GBUS 847AB - Selected Topics in General Management & Administration
A strategic decision case and teaching case note will be prepared involving a literature review, research questions, interviews, and analysis of corporate and other published documents.
GBUS 848AA - International Business Consulting - Mexico
Student teams will be assigned a problem-solving situation where a private-sector, or not-for-profit organization is looking for assistance in developing a solution to a specific problem. You will experience an international consulting environment by working on a real project, in real time, for a real client in Mexico City.

This course considers historical and contemporary topics relating to Indigenous business and leadership of relevance to both Indigenous and non-indigenous leaders and organizations. A broad range of topics, issues, and contexts may be considered, such as Indigenous leadership styles, issues, and responsibilities, Indigenous rights, governance, economic development, civic activism, and decolonization.
GBUS 860 - Managing Change
This course seeks to bring about an awareness and understanding of how organizations are managing change. The course will provide perspectives of the change strategists, the change implementors, and the change recipients. The objectives of the course is to develop sensitive and effective change-agent skills in management ranks.
GBUS 861 - Organization Theory
The course concerned with the analysis of organizations from a sociological perspective. It is concerned with such topics as organizational environment, goal formulation, organization structure and design, interorganizational linkages, power, innovation processes, and conflict. It is concerned with the management of the organization as a whole and its subunits.
GBUS 862 - Evaluation of Human Resources Practices and Systems
This course focuses on methods that can be employed by HR practitioners to assess the effectiveness of HR practices and of overall HRM systems. Students develop skills in identifying and employing valid, evidence-based decision criteria to assess HR practice and enhance their ability to evaluate information and conduct research. *** Prerequisite: GBUS 838 ***
GBUS 863 - Staffing Organizations
The course introduces and develops concepts used in the staffing of organizations. The course will cover general staffing models, basic labour markets, laws and regulations affecting staffing, introduction to measurement theory, recruitment techniques, selection techniques and tools, decision making for selection, and formalizing the job offer.
GBUS 864 - Compensation
The course introduces and develops concepts used in compensating employees and managers in organizations. The course will cover designing pay structures for strategic purposes, internal consistency and external competitiveness, job evaluation models, variable group and individual pay systems, basic employee benefits, legal issues surrounding compensation (pay equity and discrimination), compensating special groups of employees, compensation and unions, and administration topics.
GBUS 865 - Project Management
This course will introduce students to Project Management principles, intended to address the many phases of a project's life cycle. Students will learn to manage projects more effectively using Project Management techniques, through monitoring and maintaining control of scope, time, and costs within a project.
GBUS 866 - Managing Information Systems
This course provides an in-depth examination of management and organizational issues surrounding the IS/IT function in organizations. Topics include the evolution of IS/IT functions, acquiring and managing IS/IT resources, strategy, current trends and ethical issues surrounding IS/IT.
GBUS 867 - Management Consulting
Introduction to management consulting. The class introduces consulting concepts and the five-phase consulting process and provides practical experience on consulting projects. The focus is both internal and external consultants, roles that provide timely counsel and / or service to organizations with specific issues that require a consulting perspective.
GBUS 868 - Occupational Health and Safety
This course focuses on the effective management of occupational health and safety (OHS). Beginning with a survey of the history of OHS and the current legal environment, the course turns to contemporary issues in OHS (e.g., psychological harassment in the workplace). Approaches to developing and improving organizational OHS systems which enhance employee safety and well being are also discussed.
GBUS 870 - Leadership: Theory & Practice
This course covers key leadership/management skills such as clarifying personal vision, coaching, goal setting, conflict management, stress management, emotional intelligence crisis management, process and system design and communication skills. Major competency models of leadership and management are covered to familiarize students with the research and practice of leadership development.
GBUS 871 - Group Dynamics in Organizations
The course will study roles that exist in organizations and the dynamics of the interactions between these roles. In particular, focus will be on the interplay between the leadership role and decision making, creative problem solving and conflict resolution with group members.
GBUS 872 - Managing Activist Employees
This course explores the challenges presented by employees that adopt a cause within an organization and the best management practices for such situations. Both private and public organizations will be considered. Particular emphasis will be focused on ¿whistle-blowing¿ behaviour in light of legislation in Canada and other countries.
GBUS 873 - Negotiation and Conflict Resolution
This course will introduce students to the theory and practice of negotiation and conflict resolution, including alternative dispute resolution.
GBUS 874 - Cases in Leadership
This course examines leadership issues in both for-profit and non-profit organizations. A major project for the course will involve researching and writing an original case study that examines leadership issues within a real organization.
GBUS 875 - Women in Leadership
This course is designed to enhance understanding of issues relevant to women in leadership and the implications for organizations (e.g., opportunities, exclusion). Topics include leadership styles, women on boards, strategies for change, learning to become a leader, media representation, intra-gender relations between women, cross-cultural considerations, and entrepreneurship. The course will combine both scholarly and practitioner-based considerations and challenge students to surface and unsettle taken for granted assumptions about women in leadership. Guest speakers from industry and academia will be invited to share their views on specific topics to enhance the learning experience.
GBUS 876 - Managing Diversity
This course examines the increasing diversity of the work force and the resulting issues faced by organizations such as maintaining fairness and justice, making effective management decisions, allowing flexibility, and managing in a global environment. The course also examines legal frameworks that protect employee and employer rights related to dimensions of diversity.
GBUS 891 - International Financial Management
This course provides the student with an understanding of the special issues and problems involved in international financial management. Topics include: the international monetary system, balance of payments, foreign exchange markets, international parity conditions, management of exchange rate risk, sourcing funds, capital budgeting, working capital management, trade financing, international banking and portfolio diversification.
