Title: The ethics of scholarly communication
Abstract: Scholarly publications are at the heart of the research process, circulating knowledge and allowing for an economy of reputation. Despite this vital importance, ethical aspects of scholarly communication are rarely discussed. This presentation will provide an overview of the transformations of scholarly communication, focusing on the effects associated with digital technologies. Among other things, the oligopoly of commercial scholarly publishers, open access, and the advent of deceptive publishers (often referred to as “predatory”) will be discussed. The presentation will conclude on the roles of scholarly journals in the digital age.
Speaker Bio: Vincent Larivière holds the Canada Research Chair on the Transformations of Scholarly Communication at the Université de Montréal, where he is Professor of information science and Associate Vice-President (planning and communications). He is also scientific director of the Érudit journal platform, associate scientific director of the Observatoire des sciences et des technologies (OST) and regular member of the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur la science et la technologie (CIRST). His research focuses on science policy, scholarly publishing, and diversity and equity in science.
