Insight: UR Business Distinguished Speaker Series
Speaker- Mr. Harold MacKay
The next speaker in the Insight series is Harold MacKay, counsel for MacPherson Leslie &Tyerman.
Harold’s topic is “Shaping Canada's Financial System – From Saskatchewan of all Places!”.
Harold will talk about the importance to Canada of its banking sector and why our banks emerged from the financial crisis as among the world's strongest. He will discuss the way in which policy recommendations of a federal Task Force he chaired assisted that result, evaluate what worked and what didn't, and look ahead to the challenges now facing the Canadian financial system. Finally he will reflect a little on how he became an improbable key advisor on these matters from his Saskatchewan base.
Harold has extensive corporate governance experience. In the public sector he was the lead director of the Bank of Canada and the chair of the board of the Federal Business Development Bank. In addition he has served as a director of eight listed Canadian and US public companies. He is presently a director of The Toronto-Dominion Bank and the non-executive board Chair of Domtar Corporation.
Harold is also a commercial arbitrator and has been an active participant in Canadian public policy issues. He acted as a Special Representative of the Saskatchewan Government in a review of post-secondary university education in the Province. He also chaired the Task Force on the Future of the Canadian Financial Services Sector, served as the Clifford Clark Visiting Economist in the Department of Finance of Canada, and was the vice-chair of the Wise Person's Committee which reported to the Minister of Finance on Canada's securities regulatory structure.
Harold is also a member of the Levene Advisory Board.
