Pledging safety: Fostering leadership commitment to occupational safety in Saskatchewan
Presented by Dr. Sean Tucker
Abstract:
In response to the high rate of work-related injuries and research showing that senior management can play a key role in preventing injuries (Zohar & Lucia, 2005), several jurisdictions have developed “Leadership Charter Programs.” These programs involve organizational leaders (typically, a Chief Executive Officer or President) making a public commitment to continuously improve safety in their organization and community. This presentation summarizes findings from two recent studies that examine the experiences of 67 members of the Saskatchewan Health and Safety Leadership Charter. We examine why organizations joined this program (e.g., reflection of their strong commitment to safety) and how membership has changed the way they do business and interact with stakeholders (e.g., extent of involvement in injury prevention initiatives in their community). Finally, we discuss participant attitudes towards accountability mechanisms in these programs.
