I drove by the diamonds in the morning and there was a good inch of water on the infield of the North Diamond but the South Diamond seemed okay. Although the clouds loomed, it was a great night for softball. Perhaps a bit windy but then the mosquitoes were in check. I'll go on and on about the preliminaries since the story gets interesting at the end ;-)
The Uncoachables had to be reminded about rule 18 -- a first base umpire, but they eventually complied. Being a home game, The Sluggers took to the field first and held Lincoln's crew to one run. (As a side note for all you hockey fans, Lincoln has stirred some bad blood in the past amongst the Cowboys -- Regina's only incorporated adult hockey franchise). The Sluggers sputtered on offence for the first three innings posting the dreaded goose egg. After the top of the 4th, the other guys had earned a 6 run lead. Dave had to be reminded about the sliding rules in our league -- head first and feet first is 100% within the rules -- no metal cleets permitted. I was kind of in the sliding mood, with Pete Rose being my all time hero, so I made the giant leap head first into the bag during my base running excursion. I'll do it again, if it will help spark us on. Art got the RBI to prevent a skunking and then our bats went silent for a bit.
We held the Uncoachables for two innings and only two runs in the top of the 7th. Then came the speach for all the marbles. I've forgotten what I said, but I was impressed by the results -- and so were the Uncoachables. We scored 8 runs to win the game after trailing for the entire game. What fortiude and never-say-die attitude! Just for posterity I duplicated the Pete Rose slide into third. Five straight runs to start off the inning followed by a tw out rally for three more runs. Cory ended up with the winning RBI, but it was the solid team effort that put us over the top. Congratulations to one and all.
By the way, the Uncoachables were undefeated in the other league prior to the defeat they received at the hands of the TNT Sluggers. THE UNCOACHABLES: 9-0-0, 18 pts, 181 for, 65 against, 116+. But we beat them in a big way!!!
