Many of the animation theories of the 20s and 30s desired a pure form of animation which didn't attempt to copy, and thus fall into the traps of, other art forms. Abstract shapes were the rage. This is done using the filmstrip mode between Adobe After Effects and Photoshop. The original image was William at the Grand Canyon as seen last week in Grand Canyon Moment.
