Grand Canyon Moment
HD Video , 41 seconds, colour, 2012
In 2000, I redesigned Film 200 and created four projects which have remained the core assessment for the course, and for the student portfolio, even to this day (2013). One of these is the "one take study of space" in which students must explore a physical environment without stopping the camera. As much as I've enjoyed assigning, discussing, and critiquing this assignment, I have never properly completed it myself, until now. This video was shot at the Grand Canyon during my vacation. Other videos uploaded during my vacation were made ahead of time, but this one was shot with a point and shoot and uploaded without editing, titles, or any other manipulation. I shot a number of takes of it, most notably one with William beside a giant cactus, but the light was not right and the contrast with the screen on the second camera was too great. By the time we did this one, William had a clear idea of what my intention was so even does a great yell off screen at the right moment without my prompting. This screened publically, with titles and slight modifications, at the Saskatchewan Filmpool's Star and Steeple event at Cathedral Arts Festival in May, 2012.
