Building a latex puppet head using a plaster cast with Chrytene Ells
HD Video , 3 minutes , colour, 2012
This is a video about building a latex puppet head using a plaster cast which I shot during a workshop with Chrystene Ells for the "This Big World" session held at the Saskatchewan Filmpool. Chrystene, who had been a grad student of mine a couple of years before, was at this time an artist in residence at the Filmpool, focusing her time on puppet filmmaking. It had bothered me during her school years that she and I are the same age and both had a lot of experience in different areas, but that the situation had the information flowing primarily one direction. Chrystene has years of effects experience on puppets and animation in California. I wanted to learn what she know, and registering as a student of hers in this program was my chance. The face worked on in this video was sculpted by me from plastercine.. I offered it up as the demo for Chrystene to show the class how it is done. After it was transformed into rubber latex, I stretched it over a wooden ball, drilled holes in the wood, painted it, and used it for my film "It's About Time". --- VIDEO
