Uke I Am

16mm film, 5 minutes, 2009

Workshop film with Kevin MacKenzie and Steve Sutherland.

This was made as part of the 48 Hour Filmmaking frenzy. Kevin is a storyteller by trade and Steve had a lot of unorthadox ideas. We almost talked this idea to death. The story was eventually a simple one: Kevin played a marshal arts apprentice who is asking a series of stupid questions of his master, played by Steve. Steve, controlling his body but not his thoughts, imagines physically punishing Kevin for his bothersome inquiries. It turned out quite well and was awarded best film of the weekend and was also recognized for its old school special effects. It featured marshal arts, shadow play, and in-camera superimpositions to create an out of body experience.
