I'm glad to say that win or lose the Sluggers play with enthusiasm and good sportsmanship (at least in my opinion, which is really the only one that counts ;-). With the wind blowing strong out of the South East the field was set: Sluggers versus the KPMG Crushers. We started out slowly but steadily especially on offence. In the early innings, the Crushers sent "McGwire" to the plate who hit a towering foul ball ... this could have been a bad omen, but the outfield kept him in check in the latter innings. Defensively, we were solid holding the Crushers to modest innings. At one point we were down 5-8 but kept fighting our way back much like the effort last year against the Naturals in the rain. Our comebacks would probably make better headways if I stopped calling our runners out when they are safe (I'm the first to admit that I'm a poor umpire).

At the end of the sixth inning we trailed 12-15 and then the floodgates burst. The Sluggers counted seven runs in the top half of the seventh inning (signs everywhere) and took the lead for the first time, 19-15. Limiting the Crushers to one run in the bottom half of the inning sealed the victory, 19-16 (at least the margin of victory was three points, if my post game victory euphoria I cannot recall the exact scoring -- Campus Rec has the score as 19-15).

In my five years playing in the Campus Recreation softball league (which date back to 1991 off and on) I cannot recall not getting a "three cheers" from the other team. I heard that some players did not even shake hands in the post game line-up. I'm glad that the Sluggers conduct themselves in the true spirit of the game. Remember have fun out there and be a good sport!
