TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
I will try to communicate my personal teaching philosophy. I have shaped my philosophy by examining experiences throughout my life. My gender, race, marital status and economic status, and education has shaped these experiences. I think that it important for the reader to understand the perspective that I come from in order to understand my philosophy on teaching.
What is my responsibility as an educator?
I believe that it is my responsibility as an educator to help students achieve success. Success should be measured according to each individual student. Success for each student can be measured in many ways. Students may need social, academic, and/ or vocational success. These variables of success may be different each day, week, or year.
Who decides what is success?
I think the student; parents/ guardians, educational administrators and teachers define success. It is important that the student is involved inthe process of setting goals. If the student is able to participate in setting goals they will be able to relate personally and see purpose in their actions. I think students can participate in success or goal setting in every class. If the class is conducive to experiential and independent learning students will be able to personalize the content that they are learning.
Why would success be different each day, week, or year?
Canadian students come from different backgrounds. Each home can be extremely different. I believe that the terms that define success for one student may not define success for another student. Students are different and have different needs and wants. For example, an outgoing person may not need to work hard on presentation and group work, however, a family crisis may make group work and presentations seem impossible on any given day or week. I believe itis my responsibility to understand and allow for students to rewrite success as each situation arises.
What is my role as an educator in defining student success?
Although I believe that students should be included in defining success that does not mean that they are the only factor. I believe that it is my responsibility to guide students to achieve reachable and challenging goals. All students to should be challenged and encouraged to achieve their absolute best, however, at times students may have to fail in order to know what success is. I feel that failure often is a factor in success.
