Web Design for Business Time Frame: 20-25 hours

Course: E-BUSINESS 30 (grade 12)

Abstract

This unit enables students to become publishers, developing and authoring their own web pages for the business they are developing throughout the E-Business course. This unit includes an introduction to hypertext markup language (HTML), planning of the web site, creating the site, and placing the site on the World Wide Web. Students will begin to use HTML as well as a ‘cheater’ program such as Semantic Visual Page, Microsoft Front Page, or Netscape Composer.

Rationale

With web-based electronic business exploding after the turn of the century, it is important for young people (especially young entrepreneurs) to understand and be able to effectively use the many advantages of publishing on-line.

Students will pick out their favorite brand or company and find it online (if possible). Try to have students identify why that company has a web site. What advantages does having a web site give to that company.

Lecture: HTML background, usage, value, actual codes

Set up an LCD display to project the monitor of your computer onto an overhead projection screen. Demonstrate HTML coding basics.

Demonstrate step by step procedure of how to create a basic web page using a ‘cheater’ program.

Assign problem: have students create a web site by following step by step instructions

Students will be able to create a detailed site plan, outlining the content, layout, and navigation of the pages of their web site.  - demonstration

Lecture and demonstrate how to create a site plan. What is a site plan. What options do you have, what choices of navigation do you have.

Have students complete and hand in a site plan for their E-business Web Site that includes the layout of their site and their system of navigation between pages, as well as a brief rationale

Students will be able to use basic HTML coding and an HTML editor to create the web site they have planned and designed. - experiential

Students will now put their learning into action, applying their knowledge of HTML, editor programs, and Web design in order to create a web page for their E-business. Students are expected to follow the plan that they have designed, use and HTML editor, and enhance their page with the use of HTML coding.

Students will acquire and be able to apply knowledge of File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and posting. Students will acquire knowledge of domain names, and be able to choose an appropriate domain name for their business.

Lecture and demonstrate: How post a Page on the Internet. How to FTP.

Have students choose and select appropriate domain names for their E-Business.

Students will follow step by step instructions of how to post a site on a server. Use a free server such as www.webjump.com
