Pinhole f300 Glass and Light
HD Video , 71 seconds, colour, 2012
I bought an extra body cap for the NMSL Canon 5D Mark II (this is basically a thick plastic cover which will fit tightly onto the camera body when it does not have a lens mounted) and I drilled a 3/4 inch hole through the centre of it. I then took a thin piece of metal (in this case it was some aluminum from a pop can) and pierced a tiny hole through it. This piece of metal was then taped (with black tape) over the body cap hole. Mounted onto the camera, this acts as a pinhole lens.
I had to maximize the iso of the camera (around 6000) to allow me to shoot video through this pinhole. I had to do some math to estimate the f stop of the hole, but I believe my calculation to be accurate to about 10%. I could not get any images unless they were very very bright, such as the sun itself.
With this video, I began enjoying the distortion of slowing down sounds to create entirely different impressions. In this case, the soundtrack consists of a short burst of glass breaking, slowed to 1/10th speed.
My Vimeo description is "In the depth of winter I sought the life giving sun as it creeps over the horizon and hides between leafless trees." This remains true. I admit that I chose to have my sabbatical in the winter term because I don't like going outside in the cold and this gave me ample reason to stay home on the very cold days.
