Grain, The Inside and the Outside

16mm/2k digital, 2013, 22 minutes

This silent project explores the tenuous relationship that people have with the landscape on the prairies. While construction seems ongoing, it struggles to keep up with the rate of decay. As I assembled this hand processed 16mm film footage which had been shot over the span of four years, I continued to feel that my only connection to these spaces had become through the mediation of the camera; I only belong here when I have a camera in my hand. I am at once an insider and an outsider.

This project was exhibited as an installation at the MacKenzie Art Gallery as part of the Synthetic Age show, January 18 to April 14, 2013 in Regina.

This is part "Grain", a series of films with explore the importance of living on the prairies funded by the Canada Council.
