Contribution of Marketing Boards

Prepared by Vikkram (Vik) Singh for Dr.Marion Jones

Benefits of Marketing Boards

Marketing Boards stabilize prices

An interesting phenomenon associated with agriculture is that the increase in retail prices of agricultural produce has seldom any relation with an increase in farm prices. It has been found that products such as eggs, turkey, milk, wheat, chicken etc. which are sold by marketing boards increases less than many other foods particularly those which are imported.

Criticisms

These criticisms are refuted by the supporters of CWB who state that the CWB has been criticized for areas which are beyond its jurisdictions - such as grain grading and rail rates (See Schmitz and Furtan, 2000, p.41). Many of the criticism of CWB arise from the fact that many perceive the CWB as being a monopoly solely responsible for the total grain-marketing system, instead of being viewed as a component of the entire regulatory system (See Schmitz, 1996a, 1996b). For example, the CWB markets wheat and barley, but does not set the price charged by farm elevators for handling grain, nor does it lobby or fix government price and income support policies (See Schmitz and Furtan, 2000, p.41).
