Reindeer Station, an abandoned town that was first formed
in the 1930s with a load of imported reindeer, for trying to raise the
reindeer as a food source for local inuit. I think the story was that the
terrible bugs made life tough here, and once Inuvik was formed further south,
the town was abandoned in the late 1960s. A map of this area of the river
is here; we were travelling on the East
channel on the right side of the map. (7/23) |
