<Play>  Trade 7a:  One Trip to Yahk, B.C.

Kyle was now becoming quite famous.  The same week that he traded the ‘instant party’ for Michel Barrette's snowmobile, he was interviewed by George Stroumboulopoulos on The Hour – a national TV program in Canada. George asked him if there was anywhere in the world Kyle wouldn't go to make a trade.  Kyle responded. “I will go anywhere in the world except for Yahk, B.C.”
Now this was a big mistake.  He really had nothing against Yahk, B.C. or the citizens of that town.  He just never really expected to actually get a trade offer from anyone in Yahk, because it was a small, remote town on the other side of the country.  Unfortunately, the next morning, his phone rang.  The call was from Jeff Cooper.  Jeff worked for a magazine in Cranbrook, British Columbia called SnoRiders West. The magazine was located forty-five minutes from Yahk.  The magazine wanted to make Kyle an offer for his snowmobile.  Jeff Cooper offered return airfare for two people from anywhere in North America to Cranbrook, B.C., a day of skiing, meals, and of course, a snowmobile trip to Yahk.   But, Kyle had to make the trade in Yahk.  And remember, Kyle said, on national TV, he wouldn’t go to Yahk!

Kyle felt really bad.  This was a perfect offer for the snowmobile, but he had said, on national TV, that he wouldn't go to Yahk.  How could he go to Yahk?  He didn’t want to sound like a liar.  If he went to Yahk, people might think he wasn't serious about  trading.

Kyle thought long and hard and realized there was only one way to accept the offer without being a liar: he had to tell a lie!  He accepted the trip to Yahk in exchange for the snowmobile, then, he went over to the computer and wrote a message to the citizens of Yahk.
In the email message, he told the citizens of Yahk that George Stroumboulopoulos had put him on the spot on live TV.   He then told his lie!  He told the citizens of Yahk that he thought George had hypnotized him!   He said that George forced him to say that he would not go to Yahk to make the trade.  He told them that he thought Yahk was a very nice place.  He said he wanted to be friends with the citizens of Yahk, but he couldn’t be trading partners.  Then, Kyle made a suggestion to the citizens.  He suggested that somebody should start a petition to get George Stroumboulopoulos to do a live broadcast of The Hour on CBC from Yahk as an apology to Yahk. He encouraged anyone to start the petition.

Twenty minutes later, he got an email from Brent. Brent had set up an on-line petition to George Stroumboulopoulos, CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation).  The petition challenged George Stroumboulopoulos to do a remote broadcast of The Hour on CBC, live from Yahk, when Kyle MacDonald would be present to "not to make a trade."  If George Stroumboulopoulos made the broadcast from Yahk, the "hypnotic spell" he placed on Kyle MacDonald on live TV would be reversed.  Then, future trades for the one red paperclip project would be allowed to take place in Yahk.

(continued)

Kyle posted a link to the petition on his website. By the time he went to bed there were already a few signatures, some even from people he’d never met. By the next day even more people had put their name on the petition. He started thinking maybe this might actually work. Anything is possible, right?

Now, the controversy with George was causing quite a stir in Yahk.  The petition was gaining lots of attention, so Kyle sent this information to the producer of “The Hour”.  She told Kyle to watch the show that night.

Kyle and Dom watched TV that night.  George came on the show and described his situation to the nation. He explained how he had been accused of hypnotizing Kyle.  He said that he was caught in the middle of the situation between Kyle and the petition and the citizens of Yahk. George said that he and everyone at The Hour would watch the petition and see how it went. George also added, “Unlike Kyle, I would definitely like to spend some time in Yahk, British Columbia.”

Soon, the petition had more than 1000 signatures.  Kyle was excited!  He really wanted George Stroumboulopoulos and The Hour to go to Yahk.  He wanted this national newscast to travel across country as the result of petitions based on lies!  He thought this was really funny.
More and more people signed the petition. A few days later Kyle got an email from Claire at "The Hour". Claire had big news.  They had followed the petition's progress and had made a decision: The trip to Yahk was on. This was fantastic news!  "The Hour" was going to do a show live from Yahk!  They were going to film the trade. Kyle was more than excited, everything was in place – a live national broadcast to cover the trade in Yahk! There was only one problem: he had to find a way to get the snowmobile to Yahk.
