For a few years in the 1980s and 1990s when the film industry was experiencing rapid growth around Saskatchewan, lines between art and commerce were blurred. Experimental filmmakers were as legitimate as commercial filmmakers, having completed things and had them seen in other cities. We were often able to tap into the same types of funding. It was far too tempting to start to spend the five thousand dollar development load meant to create a script, diving right into shooting. This approach was never embraced; it helps to make films but not to make jobs.
