At the Dentist

HD Video, 112 seconds , colour, 2012

After years of holding a camera out at arm length to shoot self portraits, this has become strangely easy, even with a mouth full of tools and the noise of a drill filling your ears. The dentist was quite amused and supportive. I am certain that I'd have been very uncomfortable shooting a document such as this of anyone else (except perhaps my son, whom I have recently documented micro-gum-surgery). The focussed lighting makes exposure uneven and looks unnatural. I didn't do any significant shifting of audio as I wanted to maintain a sense of reality rather than of manipulation. VIDEO
