Gridiron Challenge

55-55 Tie in First Ever Centennial Gridiron Challenge

As a joint celebration of their provincial centennials the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Edmonton Eskimos held a Grid Iron Challenge. The Grid Iron Challenge was a two game total point series over the 2005 CFL season. The first game was played in Regina on September 18th. It was a very tense game that featured many lead changes. The Riders held on to a 1 point lead late in the game, but the Edmonton Eskimos were able to drive on them and set up for a short field goal attempt on the last play of the game. As the ball was snapped Rider's DB Omar Morgan ran around the corner unblocked, dived and managed to block the kick, miracously winning the game for the Riders 37-36. The next game was played in Edmonton on Oct. 15th, and in a low scoring, much less exciting game Edmonton edged the Roughriders by one point 19-18 after Rider kicker Paul McCallum missed a last play field goal wide.

The winner of the Grid Iron challenge was supposed to recieve a trophy that they could display in their team's stadium. Since this ended up being a tie this year the decision was made to put the trophy in Lloydminster, the city which borders Saskatchewan and Alberta and is half in either province. Since neither team won we will now have to wait another 100 years to know who really is the better football team.
