Bank Loans
Financial institutions provide student lines of credit to qualified students who are looking for alternative funding to help pay for school. Each financial institution has different rules, regulations, and rates so it is important to shop around and ask questions. For example, you should ask about repayment options, interest rates, maximum funding levels, how interest is applied, and what your monthly payments will look like.
Loans for Newcomers to Canada
Career Loans is a completely virtual program organized by Achēv (formerly The Centre for Education & Training) and funded through the Federal Government's Foreign Credential Recognition Program. Their goal is to support internationally trained newcomers in regulated or non regulated fields to continue their career path in Saskatchewan through free career and financial counselling and/or educational loans. The loans are accessible to newcomers who might not have access to traditional bank loans or even student loans. They are low-interest, fixed-rate micro loans for those eligible which include permanent residents, Canadian citizens or Convention Refugees.
Windmill Microlending is a non-profit serving newcomers to Canada since 2005. Windmill offers low-interest, affordable career loans of up to $15,000 to help skilled immigrants and refugees pay for the costs of education and training programs, credentials, licensing and more to reach their career goals.
Emergency Funding
Emergency Funding
The University of Regina provides emergency funding assistance to students whose continued education at the University of Regina is at risk due to unexpected financial pressures. In most circumstances, a student is eligible for a maximum funding amount of $1,000. Emergency funding is issued in the form of a personal cheque.
Eligibility Criteria
- Registered in any undergraduate faculty/federated college
- Demonstrates financial need
- If a student has completed 9 credit hours or more, they must be in good academic standing (must have a minimum UGPA of 60%, and not be on academic probation)
- Students must complete the Student Emergency Fund application form explaining their need and the impact receiving the emergency fund would have on their education. The Student Emergency Fund will be used to support U of R students in the areas of:

- Other unforseen expenses, such as remote learning needs, etc.
Applications will be reviewed on a timely and case-by-case basis. Exceptional circumstances will be dealt with on an individual basis.
If a student is unable to demonstrate financial need, but does not currently have sufficient funds to cover expenses, they may be eligible for a short-term emergency student loan. Students must meet all other eligibility requirements as outlined above and demonstrate they have the ability to repay the loan on the Emergency Funding Application Form. Repayment of emergency loan funds is due at the end of the term in which they are received.
How to Apply
To apply, undergraduate students must complete an application form which will determine their level of financial need. Supporting documentation will be submitted at the time of application as evidence of the level of financial need in the form of bank statements.
